The Power of the Drop-2 Voicing (JamPlay)

About this course

Drop-2 voicings are a cornerstone of rich, expressive guitar harmony, and in The Power of the Drop-2 Voicing, Horace Bray takes you deep into the heart of this essential technique. With his trademark clarity and creativity, Horace demystifies the structure and movement of these voicings across the fretboard, equipping you to confidently voice major, minor, dominant, and half-diminished chords from multiple string sets and positions.

The course begins by mapping out drop-2 shapes rooted on the E, A, and D strings, giving you a comprehensive understanding of their construction and fingerings. From there, Horace guides you through diatonic movement in root position and inversions, helping you hear and see how drop-2 voicings flow through keys with voice-leading elegance. Once the foundations are set, you’ll apply your knowledge to classic and creative progressions like the ii-V-I and minor ii-bV-i, as well as modern approaches such as tritone substitution and extended harmonies.

To make it all click, you’ll work through a series of real-world applications—from neo-soul licks and jazz comping lines to rock and blues-inspired riffs—culminating in a set of musical etudes designed to integrate your new harmonic vocabulary into your own playing. Horace’s lessons balance theory with practice, helping you not only learn these shapes but also understand how to use them musically and tastefully.

Whether you’re a jazz guitarist looking to refine your comping, a soul player chasing sophisticated textures, or a modern player seeking a harmonic edge, The Power of the Drop-2 Voicing will elevate your rhythm playing and broaden your chordal fluency like never before.

Excellent foundation for rhythm and lead

I came to this course with the curiosity as to what dropped two voicings were all about as I had heard the term thrown around other courses, but was not explained. Sure enough, this course does not disappoint. The beauty of this course to me was discovering what I already knew, in the form of the chords that I was already using, and taking it further using inversions auto and down the neck. Horace Bray covers everything from inversions to progressions, which is perfect for songwriting as well as lead playing. The practice sessions really test what I and the tools provide the help to solidify this knowledge. I’m finding new ways to play the same chords on the neck creating some fresh new approaches to some songs. The course may seem dry because of all of the knowledge presented, but Horace puts everything in a pleasant manner and is encouraging throughout. I’m definitely enjoying this course and would recommend it to anyone looking to expand their chord knowledge on the guitar.
