The Session Guitarists’ Playbook
Hey, I'm Sol Philcox-Littlefield. Welcome to the Session Guitarist's Playbook. I have been working in Nashville as a session guitarist for over 15 years, and I've played on over 60 platinum and 300 gold records, and been personally honored by the Country Music Hall of Fame. In this intensive course, I'm going to break down in detail my unique approach to recording guitar tracks, as well as share some universal trade secrets that can help you on your journey toward becoming an A-list session player.

I have recorded four unique songs that cover a variety of modern genres, which we are going to use to explore various approaches to multi-tracking and layering techniques. Full guitar treatments in exactly the same way that I would on a real commercial session. We'll cover how home recording has evolved, what to expect in a modern studio environment, how to start getting work as a session player, tips for dialing in tones and effects, and much more.

So if you're ready, let's dig in!
The State of Modern Session Recording
Being a session player today can take on two main forms: the traditional method, where musicians gather in a studio, hear a song for the first time, write a chart, and play as a band, and the more modern remote approach, where tracks are sent via email and worked on individually. The latter is increasingly common, with many records made remotely, especially as songs can go viral quickly, requiring fast production. Remote work offers flexibility, allowing musicians to contribute from anywhere, and it's a great way for newcomers to start. Musicians can find opportunities on platforms like Airgigs or Fiverr, working across a range of genres and styles. The key to success is making yourself available and gaining experience across different types of music, from pop to jazz to commercials.

This 11-part lesson series breaks down the process of preparing and recording two rhythm guitar parts and one lead guitar part for a song. Starting with listening to an mp3 or demo, the series demonstrates how to create a Nashville number chart to capture the song's arrangement and stylistic elements. You'll learn to identify key sections, such as verses, choruses, and bridges, and how to notate key movements like pushes and turnarounds. Each video covers important details like interpreting quick chord changes, working with split bars, and dynamically adjusting your playing. The series concludes by walking through the guitar parts in detail, helping you develop versatile approaches for recording in both studio and remote settings.

Excellent insight into studio guitarist thought process

Really like the way this course is constructed, taking nice variety of songs and showing not just what he'd play but explaining the thought process behind the choices of parts and tones. Also particularly enjoyed the slide guitar parts.

Amazing peek inside the studio world

This course is arranged in a unique and very interesting fashion. It is a peek inside what it must be like in a recording studio when you are brought in as a hired gun. This was amazing - I put my guitar down and just watched.
