Solo Jazz Pathways: The Blues
Hi, Tim Lerch here.

Welcome to this Blues edition of my Solo Jazz Pathways series.

The blues' expressive qualities and relatively simple harmonic structure provide solo guitarists with boundless creative options when composing, arranging, or improvising.

In this edition, we’ll apply a palette of creative approaches across eighteen performances using six distinctive blues feels. You’ll be surprised how using inversions, simple substitutions, and creative reharmonization can transform a common blues progression into a genuinely captivating blues performance.

You’ll appreciate how versatile these approaches are – some simple and some more complex. You can combine them or tweak them however you wish and apply them over any blues situation — or for that matter, any style of music.

While I’d love it if you learned some of these ideas, my real hope is that you utilize these concepts to make your own music in your own way.

Let's dig in!
Course Primer | Before We Dig In
Welcome to the course! Before we jump in, I'd like to briefly discuss my goals for this course and the valuable skills and knowledge you're set to gain. In this course, we'll focus on a familiar chord progression, predominantly centered around blues and blues-based chord progressions.

We'll explore these chord progressions in the context of accompaniment, whether for a singer, another player, or even ourselves. For instance, if we are in the key of B flat playing a blues, we will start with something simple. As we progress, we’ll learn to elaborate on the basic chords and voicings, enriching them either in the bass, melody, rhythm, or a combination of these elements.

Imagine you’re in the middle of a performance, accompanying a singer. We will explore how you can enhance your playing, making the performance more dynamic while maintaining the foundational chords and voicings. As the course advances, we’ll delve deeper into adding melodic content without losing the essential groove.

The teaching approach here is dynamic and interactive. While I'll be providing examples, remember that in the world of jazz and blues, improvisation is key. This course is designed to help you not just learn but also react and adapt your playing in real-time, similar to an improvisational conversation in music.

I’ll share anecdotes and stories, like one from Pat Martino, to highlight the importance of flexibility and adaptability in music. In jazz and blues, the ability to improvise is as crucial when accompanying as it is during a solo. You need a well-rounded skill set to complement and enhance the performance of others effectively.

As we journey through this course, you’ll learn strategies and techniques that I hope you will make your own. The goal is to equip you with the tools to either pare down your performance for accompaniment or amplify it for solos or more elaborate pieces. Enjoy the course, and remember to take things at your own pace—it’s all part of the learning experience.
Willie Dixon Chicago
In this segment, we will explore a fundamental blues progression in a standard key, starting with a basic chordal riff and gradually adding complexity. We begin with what I consider one of the simplest blues progressions, involving standard chords like A7, D9 or D7, and E7—all dominant 7ths. I’ll demonstrate these chords at the 5th fret, showcasing the versatility and richness they bring to a blues composition.

We'll progress step by step, initiating with a straightforward riff suitable for band performances or self-accompaniment. As we delve deeper, we’ll explore how to enhance this riff, adding intricate chord variations to elevate the musical expression. Each step is designed to build upon the last, offering you a comprehensive understanding of the progression’s adaptability.

Lastly, we’ll transform this progression into a solo guitar piece, maintaining the original feel and groove while integrating more melodic elements. This final step will encapsulate the versatility of the blues progression, demonstrating its capacity to transition from a foundational riff to a melodically rich solo performance.

Solo Jazz Pathways, The Blues

Tim is a great teacher. Always pleasant and clear. This course is no exception. It isn't a collection of beginners sessions, you have to know your way around the guitar to some degree. The material as presented proves to be challenging yet accessible for an intermediate player with plenty of interest and insights for the more advanced.
