Chord Melody for Uke: Module 2

About this course

Playing chord melody arrangements on ukulele is not very common, even though it’s so easy to learn and sounds so great!  It can transform even the most simple of tunes into beautiful engaging arrangements.

In the first module of Chord Melody for Uke, Marcy Marxer passed on a very versatile vocabulary of major and dominant chord voicings designed to highlight any song’s melody. In this second module, Marcy will expand your chord melody vocabulary with sixth chords, minor 7ths and you’ll also explore applications for diatonic scales.

You’ll play your way through the course, first learning chord scales and how to construct chord melody arrangements, and then working on a series of ukulele chord melody arrangements and playalongs.

Marcy kicks off the course with a review of the first module followed by a section where you’ll learn 6th Chord Scales in the key of C, F, G, and Bb. Each of these lesson sets features a chord scale demonstration and a practice session in their respective keys. Marcy also includes a lesson on changing keys. You'll then learn to play ukulele chord melody arrangements for Frère Jacques in Bb, and Mary's Lamb in C.

In the second section, Marcy teaches you minor 7th chord scales for A minor7, Bb minor7, D minor7, and G minor7 also with lesson sets featuring chord scale demonstrations and a practice sessions in their respective keys. You’ll learn a new chord melody arrangement for Mary’s Lamb.

In the third and final section, you’ll explore Diatonic chord scales in the key of C, F, G and Bb including more demonstrations and practice sessions. You’ll learn two more ukulele chord melody arrangements for Avalon in C and Bill Bailey in C.

Marcy includes an indispensable collection of chord charts, chord scale diagrams, tab, notation, and jam tracks. Every lesson also includes a playalong practice session to help you internalize all of the chord shapes and voicings. You can loop and slow down any of the videos so you can work with the lessons at your own pace.

Grab your Uke and let’s play some chord melody with Marcy Marxer!

Chord Melody for Ukulele: Module 2
Hi, I'm Marcy Marxer, and welcome to Chord Melody for Ukulele Module 2. In this module, we'll expand our knowledge of chord scales and chord melody to include 6th chord scales, m7 chord scales and diatonic chord scales. Don't worry! You've already done the groundwork, and it'll be smooth sailing from here on in. You'll have some artistic choices to make to express your own style. Choices will be right in front of you. Pick the positions you like best.

We'll add new chord scales to the songs we've already played, and we'll add "Avalon", "Bill Bailey" and more to our repertoire. Chord melody for ukulele opens the path to playing country, swing and jazz on the ukulele. You'll even play a chord melody influenced by Django on your uke. Best of all, chord melody is fun! Enjoy!
Module 1 Review
In Module 1 of Chord Melody for Ukulele, we mastered the major scale and accompanying chord scales as well as Dominant 7 scales and chord scales. We also addressed right-hand techniques that allow us to accentuate the melody notes on the first string. We used rest strokes to help bring out the melody notes on the second string.

Chord Melody for Uke Module 2 will progress step-by-step, just like Module 1. Feel free to go back and review Module 1 at any time.

The uke I'm playing in this series is a tenor size. My ukulele fingerboard joins the body of the uke at the 14th fret. There are two common smaller sizes: the concert and the soprano. They usually have 12 frets, but if the frets run out on your uke at 11 remember that the 12th fret gives us an octave so you can go back to first position and keep playing.
Working with This Course
Play through these lessons and Practice Sessions slowly with me. Use the Soundslice as needed. You can print out materials if you wish. Use TrueFire's metronome to slow down or speed up the tempo a little bit at a time. Play the chord scales up and down the fingerboard.

We'll get started with 6th chord scales. In each following Practice Session, we'll play up and down the fingerboard three times. Repeat as many times as you need. We'll continue by working through m7 and diatonic chord scales for a well-rounded working tool bag of chord scales.
6th Chord Scales
6th chords are made up of the root, 3rd, perfect 5th and 6th notes of the major scale. Playing chorded melody with 6th chords adds the sophisticated sound of ukulele jazz to favorite songs and melodies.
C6 Chord Scale
The notes in the C6 Chord are C, E, G and A, or root, 3rd, 5th and 6th. In this lesson, we'll play the C major scale using C6 chords as a substitute for the C major chords we played in Module 1. We'll enhance our C6 chords with the rest of the notes in the C major scale.

Please check the Guitar Pro file for the fingering suggestions. Barre the first and second strings at the 3rd fret if you can to play the C6 with the root on top. This skill is worth practicing! It may take a while to sound the notes clearly but the effort is well worth it.

Try the barred position for the C6 with the 5th on top if you have trouble getting all four fingers in the frets high on the fingerboard. Remember that using this same position lower on the fingerboard in other chord scales will be much easier.
C6 Chord Scale
Start with the C6 with the root on top. We'll play up and down the fingerboard 3 times. Remember that you can use the TrueFire software that includes Soundslice and a metronome to change the tempo for additional practice building skills and speed.
F6 Chord Scale
The F6 chord scale: The root of the F6 chord scale is on the second string. The notes in the F6 chord are F, A, C and D. We find the 5th note of the F major scale, or C, on the 1st string 3rd fret. This position with the 4th on top is the same chord position that was found at the 10th fret in the C6 chord scale. It feels very different in the lower frets.

Fancy chords over the whole Fretboard

I'm coming from the guitar (particularly jazz/gypsy jazz) and have just started to get into the Uke. This course helped me to also learn all the fancy jazz chords, scales, and melodic song arrangement on the Uke, and this over the whole fretboard. Great comprehensive course that demonstrates what’s possible on the Uke.

Chord Melody 2- Marcy Marxer

These videos and instruction have been most beneficial in helping me reach my goal as a ukulele player. I'm by no means experienced in music theory of any kind, I've been playing for 1 1/2 years and am very pleased with what I've learned. The lessons are clear, I can slow down the video to practice and the pdf's are a bonus.

Tasty Arrangements - Still Easy To Get Along With

Marcy Marxer might be listed in the dictionary under your favorite teacher, she has such a pleasant calm, and patient way of explaining even more complex things slowly in an easy accessible way, and in the end you can play some tasty arrangements. This course is perfect for guitarists, which want to get along on a uke in no time, but also for those with less experience. Although the latter one should check out Volume One first.
