Chord Melody for Ukulele: Module 1

About this course

Playing chord melody arrangements on ukulele is not very common, even though it’s so easy to learn and sounds so great!  It can transform even the most simple of tunes into beautiful engaging arrangements.

In this first module of Chord Melody for Uke, Marcy Marxer will teach you a very versatile vocabulary of major and dominant chord voicings designed to highlight the melodies of any of the songs you already play, or would like to learn.

You’ll play your way through the course, first learning how to construct chord melody arrangements, and then working on a series of chord melody arrangements and playalongs.

Marcy kicks of the course with a primer addressing Uke Sizes & Considerations, Right-Hand Tips, and best practices for Working With The Course. Then in the first section, Marcy covers Major Chords with a series of demonstration lessons and playalongs.

In the second section, Marcy covers Dominant Chords, also with a series of demonstration lessons and playalongs.

Marcy includes an indispensable collection of chord charts, chord scale diagrams, tab, notation, and jam tracks. Every lesson also includes a playalong practice session to help you internalize all of the chord shapes and voicings. You can loop and slow down any of the videos so you can work with the lessons at your own pace.

Grab your Uke and let’s play some chord melody with Marcy Marxer!

Ready to get started playing chord melody? Grab your uke and here we go!
Uke Sizes & Considerations
The uke I'm playing in this series is a tenor size. My ukulele fingerboard joins the body of the uke at the 14th fret. There are two common smaller sizes, the concert and the soprano. They usually have 12 frets, but if the frets run out on your uke at 11 remember that the 12th fret gives us an octave so you can go back to first position and keep playing.
Right Hand Tips
Emphasize the melody note by strumming firmly across the strings and letting the melody note sound last. In chorded melody, playing the melody usually falls on the 1st and 2nd strings. Use a rest stroke to accent notes that fall on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th strings.
Working with This Course
Welcome to Chord Melody for Ukulele: Module 1. This TrueFire ukulele course is full of lessons and practice sessions. Print out the PDFs and check out all of the assets as you study each lesson. This course is a step-by-step method for playing chord melody and will give you an extensive knowledge ukulele chords and their structure.

Is there music theory? Yes, in a very easy method that puts ukulele chord theory under your fingers and firmly in your memory in a way that is easy and fun. Work through this course lesson by lesson without skipping around for maximum benefit. Enjoy!
SECTION 1: Major Chords
The major scale is the basis for all chorded melody playing. The formula to remember is whole-step, whole-step, half-step, whole-step, whole-step, whole-step, half-step. Repeat the Major Scale formula several times a day until it's stuck in your memory. It's used all the time for chord building, soloing and for chorded melody.

On a ukulele, guitar, mandolin and every other stringed instrument in modern tunings, a whole-step is two frets (or skipping a fret) and a half-step is the next step, or one fret away. Move on to the next lesson to play the major scale.
Notes of the C Major Scale
Every major scale we play in this TrueFire course module will utilize the entire ukulele fingerboard.
Notes of the C Major Scale
C major scale playalong. Play slowly and deliberately naming the interval numbers and note names. Soon you'll know how to find every note on the fingerboard.

Great intro to Ukelele chording

I play a bit of banjo and guitar and just started with the uke. This course is an eye opener for the uke, what’s neat is that a lot of it is also an eye opener for music theory in general. Thanks Marcy!
