Fingerstyle Breakthroughs

About this course

Anyone who has witnessed the “magic hands“ of Tommy Emmanuel can fully appreciate why Chet Atkins bestowed him with the prestigious Certified Guitar Player title, calling him, “One of the greatest players on the planet.”

Students of guitar can’t help but wonder if the “six-string magic” that Tommy conjures up on the fretboard is even physically possible. Even advanced players struggle to emulate his technical mastery and creative finesse. All of the tab, notation, and video available today will only get you so far. No worries thrill seekers — Tommy Emmanuel’s new interactive video course, Fingerstyle Breakthroughs will help get you the rest of the way.

In the same way that a master magician teaches sleight-of-hand moves to an apprentice, Tommy slows it all down and lifts the hood to reveal the underlying mechanics that power his distinctive technique in Fingerstyle Breakthroughs.

For those players just starting to develop their fingerstyle skills, Fingerstyle Breakthroughs picks up where Fingerstyle Milestones left off. More advanced players will also benefit from this revealing curriculum, which breaks down the key elements of Tommy’s technique.

”On our journey as fingerstyle players, we start out learning the importance of thumb independence, boomchick bass, chords, melodies and harmony. In Fingerstyle Milestones we worked on your basic fingerstyle skills, and now with Fingerstyle Breakthroughs we’re going to learn 11 songs and new techniques such as inversions for boomchick patterns, muting techniques, classic fingerstyle licks, and how to build thumb speed.”

Tommy organized the course into three sections. In the first section, you’ll learn two new songs; Sweet Alla Lee and Spanish Fandango. For each of the two songs, Tommy will first perform the tune at tempo, then break it down for you. Tommy will also guide you through a slow playalong version of the song to practice with. On these two tunes, you’ll work on bass muting techniques and sustaining the melody to keep the higher notes ringing out.

In the second section, Tommy demonstrates a series of new ‘breakthrough’ techniques to prepare you to perform the songs in Section 3. You’ll work on Boomchick Inversions, Muting Techniques, Classic Fingerstyle Licks & Exercises, Bringing Out The Melody, Building Thumb Speed, Quick Chord Changes, 4 Stretching Exercises & Playalongs, and Key Changes.

In the third and final section, Tommy teaches you his original fingerstyle arrangements of 9 more songs: Back Home Again In Indiana, House of the Rising Sun, Tennessee Waltz, Liebestraum, Waltzing Matilda, Lime House Blues, The Entertainer, Avalon, and Cakewalk.

Similar to the song studies in Section 1, Tommy will first perform the tune at tempo, then break it down for you emphasizing the ‘breakthrough’ techniques that you learned in the previous section. Tommy will also guide you through slow playalong versions for all of the songs.

All of the key examples, performances, and playalongs are tabbed and notated for your practice, reference and study purposes. You’ll also get Guitar Pro files so that you can play, loop and/or slow down the tab and notation as you work through the lessons.

Grab your guitar and let’s breakthrough with Tommy Emmanuel!

Fingerstyle Breakthroughs
Hi, I'm Tommy Emmanuel and welcome to Fingerstyle Breakthroughs. In Fingerstyle Milestones we learned some essential fingerstyle skills, and in this course I'll be focusing on teaching 11 songs and how to perform them. I'll also show you some new techniques that are needed to master these songs, such as inversions for learning boomchick patterns, muting techniques, classic fingerstyle licks, and thumb speed exercises.

In the first section, tunes like "Sweet Alla Lee" and "Spanish Fandango" will help you get up to speed. The third section focuses on expanding your repertoire with songs like "Back Home Again in Indiana", "House of the Rising Sun", "Waltzing Matilda", and more. I'll break everything down for you, working through the tunes together slowly and at tempo, and as always, notation and tablature are included in this course. So, grab your guitar and thumbpick, and let's get started!
SECTION 1: Review & Warm Up
In this first section, I'll show you two new songs - "Sweet Alla Lee" and "Spanish Fandango". These songs are simpler and a great place to get started, utilizing the techniques learned in Fingerstyle Milestones.
Sweet Alla Lee
In this video, I'll give you a short performance of the song "Sweet Alla Lee" played at a moderate tempo.

Once you've worked with the lesson for this song and have learned to put the parts and necessary techniques together, be sure to work with the slow playalong first before moving it up to this tempo.

Take your time working this piece out, learn the mechanics slowly first and then as you become more comfortable, work your way up to this tempo.
Sweet Alla Lee
In this segment Tommy shows you how to play the song "Sweet Alla Lee".

This is a song worked out from Chet Atkins' recording from the album Almost Alone, a beautiful melody in the key of C that's easy to learn right off the bat. The bass part of this tune is muted slightly with the palm of the hand, with the melody being played with sustained notes. You should take this opportunity to get used to using your thumb to play the bass notes to keep the higher notes clear, playing the F bass note here.

Work slowly through this tune, focusing on one section at a time until you get it. Keep playing it until your hands learn exactly where to go in the changes so you can play it at speed (though maybe not as fast as Chet plays it).
Sweet Alla Lee
In this playalong, we'll put all of the mechanics we just learned together and play through the song "Sweet Alla Lee" at a slow tempo.

Before you tackle this playalong, be sure that you're comfortable with each of the techniques we worked on in the lesson and can play through the changes with ease.

Take your time with this playalong session and hey, if you're still having trouble, go back and review the lesson video and make sure you have all of the mechanics under your fingers. A metronome is another great tool to help you work this piece at different tempos.
Spanish Fandango
In this video, I'll give you a short performance of the song "Spanish Fandango" played at a moderate tempo.

Once you've worked with the lesson for this song and have learned to put the parts and necessary techniques together, be sure to work with the slow playalong first before moving it up to this tempo.

Take your time working this piece out, learn the mechanics slowly first and then as you become more comfortable, work your way up to this tempo.
Spanish Fandango
In this segment Tommy shows you how to play the song "Spanish Fandango".

This song is normally in a 3/4 or 6/8 time, with most people playing it in an open G tuning. But, in this style, it works in the key of C and in 2/4 time. There's no real "traps" in this tune, just a couple of things to look out for that will be highlighted in the lesson. Again, utilize your thumb to play the bass notes so your hand has more freedom to move around - it's your choice, but a great tool to pick up!

Make sure that the melody is sustaining. Keep your hands locked in position while playing the bass part so the higher notes continue to ring out.
