About this course

Few would argue that Tommy Emmanuel is the most charismatic, soulful, and technically brilliant fingerstyle guitar player walking the planet today. Learning to play any of Tommy’s songs, as Tommy himself would perform it, is no easy task for we mere mortal guitar players, but the learning adventure is rich with rewards.

Tommy’s Certified Gems includes 52 multi-angle video guitar lessons presenting full performances and detailed breakdowns of Mr. Guitar, Classical Gas, Borsalino, To B or Not To B and Cowboy's Dream.

”In this first edition of Certified Gems we've picked 5 songs for you - some of them I've been performing at my concerts for quite a while, some of which people have written to me and asked to do an instructional video about. We'll learn Mr. Guitar, Classical Gas, Borsalino, To B or Not To B and Cowboy's Dream. First I'll tell you a little about the song - where it comes from, why I wrote it - and then I'll perform the song for you, after which I’ll break it down and teach you how to play it.

These are songs that I've thought about carefully because they're all songs that I love to play and wonderful songs to learn. When I tour, people are always asking me "Can you play 'Classical Gas'? Will you play "To B or Not B'?", and I just wanted to share them with you. I'm also so excited about the fact that we've got this new technology where you'll be able to get any kind of camera angle you want. We've got different ones on the left hand, different ones on the right hand, we've got a wide shot, and even a composite view. I want you to have fun with this and I'm really, really thrilled that we're able to bring you this kind of teaching method that is really thorough and done properly, and I just hope you get as much enjoyment out of it as I've had bringing it to you. So, enjoy!”

For each of the 5 tunes, Tommy first shares a little background on his inspiration for the composition and then performs the tune in its entirety. Tommy then steps you through a detailed note-by-note breakdown covering every section of the arrangement and every technique he employs during the performance; intros, verses, choruses, outros and even the improvisational sections - you get it all straight from Tommy.

Tommy is extraordinarily inventive on the fretboard, which makes learning his songs, and playing them correctly, challenging because it's difficult to discern exactly what Tommy is doing with both his right and left hands. That’s why we include a variety of angles and close-up views of both hands, plus a wide and a composite view for each of the 5 songs in the course. You won’t miss a thing!

Ready to start your Tommy Emmanuel learning adventure? Grab your guitar, pick your favorite Tommy tune and lets dig in with the master himself!

NOTE! Due to licensing restrictions, tab & notation is only available for Cowboy's Dream and Mr. Guitar.

Borsalino: 1
This arrangement of Borsalino has evolved in my hands since the late 70s. The original song was written by Claude Jean Harry Bolling for the movie “Borsalino,” a 1970 film directed by Jacques Deray, starring Alain Delon, Jean-Paul Belmondo and Catherine Rouvel.

I give credit to my friend Dan Johnson who originally came up with the idea and played it for me one day. I fell in love with the song immediately and then, once I worked up my arrangement, I played it for Chet Atkins over the phone. The same thing happened with him - he fell in love with the song and learned this arrangement as well.

I'll play it through at normal tempo and then step you through the arrangement slowly, one section at a time, and point out the things that I think are important to help you play it as best as you can.

Add this one to your collection!

I first heard Tommy at a CAAS event the year Chet Atkins passed. He played with such feeling and grace that even when he broke into lightning quick passages, the emotion was never replaced! This class is worth it for Classical Gas alone.. you will learn how he structured the song and see why he is who he is! None of them are for beginners and that's the real gem in these. You may find yourself stripping them down to basic versions just to get through them, but..that's the great thing.. there is always more to go back to within any of the songs convered!

Tommy's courses are the best thing when you can't meet him in person. He's a hell of a player and brings everything he has as a performer and entertainer.
