About this course
Fingerstyle guitarists know that specific techniques serve as the foundation of their craft. One of the most fundamental—and versatile—is the boomchick technique. It’s the rhythmic heartbeat of countless songs, spanning genres like country, folk, blues, and ragtime. At its core, boomchick is a simple but incredibly effective way to play the bass and rhythm simultaneously, creating a rich, full sound that imitates the interplay of a bassist and rhythm guitarist.
Tommy Emmanuel’s Boomchick Workouts completes an unrivaled educational trilogy that guides players through an interactive curriculum designed to impart the technical and creative skills inherent in boomchick fingerstyle guitar.
Tommy's first two editions, Milestone and Breakthrough, imparted the essential skills and a foundational repertoire. Boomchick Workouts is the rite of passage to becoming an accomplished fingerstyle guitarist capable of tackling the entire songbook and performing professionally.
”I’ll guide you through a series of 15 progressive, bite-sized lessons, workouts, and playalongs designed to help you practice and nail the dexterity you need to take on tunes from the boomchick fingerstyle repertoire.
I’ll break down exercises in each workout to build your independence, rhythm, and control—learning to keep that steady bass line while adding melody and harmony on top. After each lesson, we’ll play through the workout together in a play-along session.
Even if you only have a few hours a week, if you put in the time and focus on your practice correctly, you will get it down. I’m so excited to share my experience as you take on your boomchick journey.“
You’ll have TrueFire’s interactive learning tools at your fingertips to customize your workspace and learn at your own pace.
The demonstrations and performances are tabbed, notated, and synced to the video lessons with controls for looping, slow motion, fretboard animation, and other tools designed to accelerate your progress.
You’ll also get the tab and standard notation files to print out and downloadable Guitar Pro files to edit if desired.

In this lesson series, we’ll embark on a transformative journey to refine your guitar playing through focused practice, patience, and dedication. Think of this as a workout, building skills before making music, as developing new muscle memory and techniques takes time. Embrace meticulous practice with tools like a metronome to internalize timing and aim for the natural, effortless feel that defines great playing. The size of your hands doesn’t matter; your determination and consistency do. Repetition, even when tedious, is key to smoothing out difficult parts and mastering them. Avoid practicing in front of others until you’re ready to perform confidently, and ensure your guitar setup supports comfortable, prolonged practice. This process may be challenging, but the rewards—a deep connection with your instrument and the joy of making music—are worth every effort.
In this lesson series, we will explore foundational techniques and skills essential to mastering fingerstyle guitar, starting with a workout based on the classic Chet Atkins tune Trambone. You will learn to play the chord progression (C, A minor, F, G) while incorporating thumb-over-the-top technique for the bass notes, especially on the F chord. We'll focus on refining your technique, building dexterity, and developing patience, as every skill takes time to master. By the end, you'll gain confidence and precision in executing these techniques, setting the stage for further musical growth.

Boom Chick Workouts
This is a great course to get your Thumb and fingers going. I had been playing finger style guitar for several years and found the content really accessible straight away. Even though I’ve worked on a lot of the concepts before (e. g. thumb patterns, melody and separation between thumb and fingers), I found the chord concepts really helpful to generate new ideas. I would recommend this course for anyone interested in this style of playing from beginner to advanced.
