Hi, I'm Brad Carlton, and I have a question for you. If I said, "I want you to play over a jam track. I'm going to email you one, send you one, or share it with you on Google Drive," what are you going to do with it? Many people don't play in bands; they just want to have fun at home. Since they don't have a band or any musicians on retainer, what do they do? They play over a jam track.

I'm going to take you step by step through a jam track that's just a static chord—just a bass and drum vamp. I'll talk about how to solve the puzzle. The bass line gives you some components, and the drums give you some components. You study the rhythm and then examine what scale or scales you could play, and what chord or chords you could play.

I'll guide you through from absolutely simple foundational principles to more exotic ideas. So grab your guitar and let's jam over a jam track.
Analyzing The Track pt. 1
If you're not familiar with what's going on in the jam track, choosing what to play can feel like a shot in the dark. Many of my students aren't in bands and just want to enjoy playing at home, often with a drum machine or jam tracks. We'll start from the basics with simple, static chords so you can focus on one scale without worrying about chord changes, helping you train your ear and build a solid foundation. We'll explore how to break down the rhythm, identify scales and chords, and gradually move to more advanced concepts like chromaticism.
Analyzing The Track pt. 2
When you're working with a bass line, you want to make sure you can really hear and understand it. I've turned down the volume on the drums, turned the bass up, and slowed the tempo down. This is crucial because if you're figuring out something by ear, you need to slow things down. Back in my day, before digital and cassette records, I had to learn everything by ear at full speed. Nowadays, you have software and tools that let you slow things down, which is incredibly helpful. With a drum machine, you can practice at different tempos, helping you understand how the groove changes with tempo variations.
Analyzing The Track pt. 3
Now I'm going to help you master playing over jam tracks by breaking down the key components. We'll start with understanding the bass line and drum parts and then move into some essential music theory to connect the dots. You'll learn how to match scales to the bass line, creating the right tonalities for your solos and compositions. Whether you're a beginner or have some experience, this course will deepen your musical understanding and improve your ability to jam with confidence.
Constructing Rhythm Parts Pt. 1
In this lesson I'm going to teach you how to enhance your guitar playing by focusing on the bass line and rhythm. You'll learn how to double the bass line, explore different techniques like hammer-ons, pull-offs, and slides, and understand the importance of dynamics in your playing. We'll practice playing the bass line in different positions and fingerings, and I'll show you how to achieve various sounds by adjusting your picking style. Whether you're jamming with a band or playing along with a jam track, this course will help you develop a more versatile and expressive guitar style.
Constructing Rhythm Parts Pt. 2
In this lesson we’ll dive into how using fewer notes can leave room for other instruments and solos, creating a more open sound. You'll learn to identify key notes on the fretboard and apply them in different contexts, whether you're comping or playing lead. We'll explore various voicings and how to make your playing more expressive by strategically choosing which notes to include.
Constructing Rhythm Parts Pt. 3
In this lesson, I’m going to guide you through some essential bass lines and chord forms, focusing on root, flat seven, and fifth notes. We'll explore the difference between minor and dominant chords by altering the third note, and I’ll introduce you to shell voicings, which simplify chords by focusing on the guide tones—thirds and sevenths. I'll show you how to play these chords in a way that complements other instruments in a band setting.
