Jamming Over A Track Vol. 5
Hi, I'm Brad Carlton. Welcome to Jamming Over a Track, Volume 5.

If you’ve followed along with the previous courses, you’ve learned key principles for jamming over a track with an A groove. We covered Dorian, minor pentatonic, and various chord concepts. In this course, we’re switching things up with a new jam track—not just to break the monotony but to explore fresh options.

We’ll dive into the Mixolydian mode, chord forms, and how to voice chords while choosing the right notes to play. So, grab your guitar, and let’s jam!
New Jam Tracks | Funk in G
In this lesson, you’ll move beyond the jam track you've been practicing and explore new tracks to develop versatility and deepen your understanding of groove, tonality, and musicality. We’ll start with fundamental ear training and rhythm exercises, like breaking down bass lines by ear, recognizing rhythmic patterns, and adjusting pitch. You’ll also focus on voice leading and chord voicings to connect harmony and melody effectively, learning to identify and transition smoothly between G minor triads and complementary chords. Throughout, you’ll practice purposeful playing, examining how each choice enhances the musical experience. Ultimately, the goal is not just technical mastery, but expressive musicianship—making every note intentional, connecting with the music deeply, and finding your unique voice as a guitarist.
Mixolydian | Subsets
In this lesson, we'll dive into the Mixolydian mode to enhance your playing over the new jam track, focusing on dominant seventh chords and their extensions—particularly the G9 chord, a staple in funk music. You'll learn how to create engaging rhythm guitar parts by experimenting with different chord voicings and rhythmic patterns, emphasizing the importance of space and interaction within the groove. We'll explore how adding specific "spices" like the flat 7 and incorporating chromaticism can enrich your sound. Additionally, we'll discuss effective practice strategies, ear training, and the importance of being analytical, disciplined, and patient in your musical journey.
Mixolydian | 7 Shell Voicings
In this lesson, we'll delve into the importance of shell voicings for guitarists, particularly when playing dominant seventh chords in the Mixolydian mode. You'll learn how to focus on the essential notes—the root, third, and flat seventh (the guide tones)—to create clear and supportive harmonic structures without cluttering the higher frequencies, which is especially useful in duo settings. We'll practice forming these shell voicings on both the sixth and fifth strings, experiment with different fingerings, and explore how breaking chords into fragments can add variety to your rhythm playing. By the end, you'll be able to confidently apply these shell voicings over a funk groove, enhancing your harmonic vocabulary and overall musicianship.
Mixolydian | 7 Guide Tones
In this lesson, we'll delve into the use of guide tones—the essential shell voicings without the root—to enrich your funk playing over a G7 chord. You'll learn how the third (B) and flat seventh (F) create a tritone interval that divides the octave evenly, allowing for perfect inversion when moved up six frets. We'll apply these guide tones on adjacent strings to add rhythmic punctuation and funkiness to your grooves, much like classic horn parts in James Brown's music from the '60s. We'll also explore the half-step approach principle to enhance your sliding techniques. By the end, you'll understand how to effectively use guide tones to add depth and character to your playing.
Mixolydian | 7 Voicings
In this lesson, we'll streamline your understanding of G7 chord voicings by focusing on drop two voicings on the top four strings. You'll learn how to finger these voicings—starting with the flat 7, 3, 5, and 1—and how to work out their inversions by moving each note up to the next chord tone. We'll explore different forms like D7, C7, and A7 to create four-voice block chords and experiment with adding color tones such as the flat 3, 6, and 9 to enrich your sound. By modifying chord grips and transitioning between chords like G7sus4, Gm7, and G7, you'll develop a smarter approach to building your chord vocabulary and enhance your ability to create interesting harmonic movements in your playing.
Mixolydian | 7/6 Voicings
In this lesson, we'll explore how to transform a dominant seventh chord into a 7♭6 chord by raising the fifth to the sixth, focusing on creating effective and pleasing voicings. You'll learn to experiment with different chord shapes, understanding that some may initially sound unconventional, and identify which voicings best fit your style. I'll guide you to gradually build your harmonic vocabulary without overwhelming yourself, emphasizing the importance of patience and consistent practice. By developing your sound and style step by step, you'll discover how these unique harmonies become valuable tools in your musical expression, enhancing your versatility and depth as a guitarist over time.
