Guitar Lab: 7(no3) Structures Vol. 2

About this course

7(no3) Structures Vol. 2 goes deeper into how to expand the core 7(no3) voicing into real-world lines and colors by adding key scale degrees, exploring different modes, and using chromaticism to create movement. Built from the flat seven, root, and five, this lean three-note structure still keeps the harmony open and ambiguous, but in this volume you’ll learn how to push it further so it supports both harmonic playing and single-note improvisation.

Brad breaks down how to add and apply notes like the 6, 2, 4, 3, b3, b2, b6, and b5, showing how each choice shifts the mood and function while staying connected to the original structure. You’ll work these ideas through multiple string sets and inversions, and learn how to hear and visualize the fretboard so these extensions feel intentional instead of random.

Along the way, the course strengthens much more than just your chord vocabulary. You’ll sharpen your theory, improve your fretboard awareness, develop better fingerings, and train your ears to recognize tension and release through voice-leading and chromatic motion. By the end of the course, you’ll have a bigger, more expressive 7(no3) toolkit for comping, jamming, and improvising with confidence. So grab your guitar, open up the fretboard, and let’s dig into 7(no3) structures.

I’ll also talk about chromaticism, and how to play some great lines that won’t just be harmonic lines they’re going to serve you when you’re improvising with single-note lines.

So grab your guitar, and let’s dig into some 7 0 3 structures.
7(no3) Structures
In this lesson we ll add the 6 to your 7(no3) voicing and use it for a bluesy Chuck Berry style sound and more keyboard ish color. We ll drill the half step relationship between 6 and b7 explore slurs and try different layouts so you can control sustain and intonation.
7(no3) Structures
In this lesson we ll add the 2 (9) by raising the root up a whole step revealing that familiar upper structure sound (like a minor triad over the bass). We ll work through the inversions practice chord melody style movement and connect back to the 7(no3) grip for clear resolution.
7(no3) Structures
In this lesson we ll replace the 5 with the 4 to get that sus flavor then explore the 4 to 5 motion and how it punctuates a blues feel. We ll also look at multiple fingerings (including double stops) so you can choose what rings what chokes and what stays in tune.
7(no3) Structures
In this lesson we ll add the natural 3 to complete the dominant 7th sound and build classic blues turnaround style movement through the voicing. We ll focus on keeping voices sustaining where possible using smart fingerings and hearing where the moving line sits best (top middle or bottom voice).
7(no3) Structures
In this lesson we ll add the b3 to shift the sound into minor territory and compare minor 7 dominant 7 and sus colors using the same basic framework. We ll also work the b3 to 3 move for that signature blues tension release and start playing around with the voices to discover new sounds.
7(no3) Structures
In this lesson we ll bring in the b2 for a more exotic flamenco Phrygian vibe then add the b6 to deepen the color into Phrygian dominant territory. We ll connect these sounds back to simple shapes (like a minor triad over the bass) and practice staying in one area long enough to really hear it.
