About this course

Rhythm Architects; you know them well. They've tickled your ears on recordings and blown you away on stage. They play the perfect rhythm guitar part every time. They ice the cake on every tune. Drummers, bass players, keyboard players and vocalists alike love these cats. They always get and keep the gig. They make it look easy and effortless yet you can't quite break down exactly what they're doing or why it works so well. One thing for sure though -- you'd give one of your big toes to have those chops.

Put that meat cleaver away! Robbie Calvo's Rhythm Architect cracks the code for crafting the ideal rhythm guitar part for any rock, pop, funk, R&B or blues tune. Better yet, Robbie's syllabus is so accessible and intuitive that you'll find these lessons easier to absorb than tying your shoes. No tedious theory to muddle through. No chord dictionary to memorize. No boring exercises to work through. You'll simply play your way through the course putting what you learn to immediate use.

Nashville session player, singer-songwriter, six-string wizard and all-around educational maestro, Robbie Calvo is the musician's musician. Robbie's playing is described as "flawless and inspired" and his workshops are jammed with pros across all styles of guitar. Calvo's TrueFire courses have generated a cult-like following amongst students. Sweet Notes, RhythmCraft and SoloCraft rose to the top of our charts almost immediately after their introduction. The Rhythm Architect is sure to follow.

You'll learn how to craft the perfect chord voicing, apply the most appropriate rhythmic pattern, play killer bubble parts or fills, and most importantly - develop the creative and technical skills necessary to make your parts not just complementary but majorly distinctive as well.

The Rhythm Architect is comprised of 17 sets of lessons, referred to by Robbie as "Blueprints." Each Blueprint features a stylized rhythm section foundation with multiple guitar parts layered on top.

Robbie first overviews the blueprint and then steps you through the what, whys and wherefores for each guitar part. In turn, working with the layered rhythm tracks, you'll learn, playalong and then perform each part until you have a solid grip on all of the guitar parts - 50 guitar parts in total! In addition to all of the main tracks, Robbie also recorded 5 creative development tracks for you to work out your own parts against his first guitar part. Once you've worked through this course you'll also have studio quality jam tracks to craft your solos over. Pretty cool, huh?!

The beauty of this approach is how it mirrors the real world where you generally find yourself working with another guitar player and/or keyboard player at the jam, on stage or in session. The very last thing you want to do is play the same part that another instrument is playing. The Rhythm Architect can craft and perform the perfect part on the fly and so will you!

The Train
A 4 part blues/rock groove in the key of E.
The Train
The architecture for this 4 part blues rock groove in the key of E is built on the foundation of guitar part no.1 holding down the low end in open position. Barring the B and E notes on strings 5 and 4 with my first finger allows me to play the A/C# and D major chord move on the lower four strings. Of course I'm using the open E string as well to give me a nice low end. Playing my first guitar part in the lower register gives me some flexibility when super-imposing other guitar parts because I've left room for other tonal frequencies to be added above this guitar part. Don't forget to try and slide into the E chord from a semitone below and also remember to push and pull the beat a little to make the part have a nice feel.
The Train
I begin building our groove by creating a great complementary guitar part using chords voiced an octave above our original. The wonderful thing about separating the voicings by an octave is the depth of sound that results, not to mention the subtle variations in phrasing and the hammers and pull offs that often occur when using new chord shapes. Watch the videos and listen to the parts and how I played them carefully, you'll hear exactly what I mean by this.
The Train
We have two really solid guitar parts now playing with the rhythm section and it's already sounding pretty full and groovy. How about adding a single note line riff that repeats over the groove? The riff I played is basically the lick from 'Crossroads'. The notes are derived squarely from the open position E minor pentatonic scale. It's a pretty simple idea that I think really drives the groove along and gives the listener something interesting to listen to in the way of a musical 'hook'. The riff is rounded off nicely with some minor 3rd double-stops that slide from the C#/E into the B/D that give us chord tones of an E7 chord.
The Train
Playing the riff an octave above is a great way to add depth to the music. I chose to do this at the 7th position because of the double-stop 6ths I end the phrase with. You'll notice that the major 6ths in this guitar part are actually an inversion of the minor 3rds in part 3. Check out how cool the two ideas sound together, now that's magic! Please remember that you can build the groove by playing each of the ideas presented here in turn to keep the musical content interesting without ever being too complex or redundant, especially if you are the only guitarist at the session.
