30 Bebop Chordal Licks You MUST Know

About this course

All of the great jazz guitarists can improvise melodically with single note lines, but they also have great command of improvising melodically with chord voicings to create more harmonic interest and better emphasize the changes.

Sheryl Bailey’s collection of 30 Bebop Chordal Licks will majorly fill out your vocabulary of chord voicings to "hipify" your harmonic sensibilities for any stylistic setting, from bebop to contemporary jazz.

”By learning any vocabulary of licks, a player can learn the language of a particular style. Even more importantly, licks can create an enlightened pathway to understanding the universal elements of music: harmony, melody and rhythm.

This course will provide you with some indispensable language to begin creating melodies with chords over the most common harmonic patterns in jazz standards and tunes.

With this collection of thirty bebop chordal licks, I’ll first give you a demonstration, over a backing track, and then I’ll show you how to play it.

You’ll practice each line by playing along with me first and then playing the lick on your own, over the backing track.

Stick with me on this journey, and I guarantee that these will also develop your left hand technique to attain the dexterity and flexibility required of a great jazz guitarist.”

You’ll get standard notation and tabs for all of the playing examples and performance studies. Plus, you’ll be able to use TrueFire’s learning tools to sync the tab and notation to the video lesson.

You can also loop or slow down any of the videos to work with the lessons at your own pace. All of the backing tracks are also included as well.

Grab your guitar, and let's dig in with Sheryl Bailey!

30 Bebop Chordal Licks You MUST Know
Welcome to this exploration of chordal licks that you can use in any situation for bebop and beyond. These bits of vocabulary will help you develop your harmonic hipness and rhythmic savvy, and give you some insight into the magical world of chord voicing, voice leading and chord substitution.
Shell Blues
Shells voicings are your ticket to great rhythm guitar playing for duo, trio, and making your own rhythm tracks. This blues will get you started with the shapes and get your quarter note SWINGING!
Four To The Bar Blues
THis series of voicings come from the Freddie Green school of a true "4 to the Bar" style, where you change voicings on every beat to create a swinging quarter note and forward motion.
Walking Blues
Whether you're playing in a duo, solo, or making your own jam tracks to practice along with, the "walking bass/chord" style is an important "lick" to master. It is great for comping and can be a springboard for solo chord style soloing.
Three Note Blues
Here's the secret to harmonic hipness and richess! When you take away the bass note of the shell voicings, you're left with the "guide tones," the "skeleton" of the harmony. You can add color and intrigue to them by adding an extension (aka tension) above them. Three note voicings sound HUGE within an ensemble, proving that "less is more!"
Nine Blues
Adding the 9th to your Dom7 voicings in a blues with make your comping style more rich and get you to the true sound of jazz your are seeking. These type of voicings also sound great in R and B, traditional blues, and pop situations, so feel free to experiment with them whenever you can.
Altered Blues
You might need to be provocative, or you might be comping for someone who is taking it "out there." If that's the case, these voicings will come in handy to get some more modern and contemporary sounds in your grab bag.
