Classical Melodies Handbook

About this course

Musicians, composers, and even listeners across all genres of music would all agree that “melody is the essence of music,” to quote Mozart. Whatever style of music you study as a guitarist, exploring classical melodies will reveal countless key learnings about performing instrumentals and composing your own original melodies and songs.

To that end, Evan Taucher designed this Classical Melodies Handbook for both classical guitarists and fingerstyle guitarists. Even if you’re not a fingerstyle or classical player, you’ll find the lesson material to hold a wealth of knowledge about melody and its underlying rhythm and harmony.

”I’ve designed the course for both classical guitarists and fingerstyle guitarists. I hope that Classical guitarists will find the lesson material useful for refining their technique and enhancing their performance of classical melodies.

I also hope that fingerstyle players will find the course to be a very accessible approach for expanding what they already know to broaden their technique and repertoire into the classical arena.“

Evan Taucher tours and teaches internationally. Recently chosen among all North American applicants as a Magellan Scholar to study in Spain with the classical guitar’s foremost luminaries. Evan has won 8 separate prizes in professional competitions throughout the United States including 3 Grand Prizes. Evan was also awarded two prestigious grants commissioning nine new works for classical guitar. We’re thrilled to welcome Evan to the family with his first TrueFire course, Classical Melodies Handbook!

”I’ve organized the course into 10 lesson sets. Each set focuses on a particular classical melody of a well-known composition. I’ll perform the piece, break it down for you, and then step you through a series of lessons related to the piece covering a key concept or technique.

Across this series of lessons, we’ll explore Making the Melody Sing, The Bass-line Melody, Separating the Voices, Artificial Harmonics Workout, Ornaments Workout, Dynamic Arc, Focus on the Accompaniment, Accentuating the Melody, Traversing the Fingerboard, Rhythmic Melody Focus, Open Melody and and many other approaches to help you make the melody sing.”

You’ll learn melodies from some of the most widely celebrated classical pieces including Romanza, Asturias, Mozart Variations, and Cello Suite No.1 Prelude. We’ll study the melodies of classical composers like Francisco Tarrega, J.S. Bach, Miguel Llobet, Eric Satie and many others.

Evan will explain and demonstrate all of the key concepts and approaches along the way. You’ll get standard notation and tabs for all of the performance studies. Plus, you’ll be able to use TrueFire’s learning tools to sync the tab and notation to the video lesson. You can also loop or slow down the videos so that you can work with the lessons at your own pace.

Grab your guitar, and let’s dig in with Evan Taucher!

Classical Melodies Handbook
Hi I’m Evan Taucher. Welcome to the Classical Melodies Handbook.

Whatever style of music you study as a guitarist, exploring classical melodies will reveal countless insights about performing instrumentals and composing your own original melodies and songs.

I’ve designed the course for both classical guitarists and fingerstyle guitarists. My hope is that Classical guitarists will find the lesson material useful for refining your technique and enhancing your performance of classical melodies.

Whereas fingerstyle players might find the course to be an accessible approach for expanding what you already know to broaden your technique and repertoire into the classical arena.

I’ve organized the course into 10 lesson sets. Each set focuses on a particular classical melody of a well-known composition. I’ll perform the piece, break it down for you, and then step you through a series of lessons related to the piece covering a key concept or technique. Everything is tabbed and notated and you’ll have all of TrueFire’s Learning Tools to work with along the way.

Across this collection, we’ll explore various right hand patterns, separating the bass and melodic voices, ornamentation, shifting, dynamic arcs, avoiding string squeaks, and many other approaches to help you make the melody sing.

We’ll learn melodies from some of the most well-known classical pieces including Romanza, Asturias, Mozart Variations, and the prelude from the first Cello Suite, just to name a few. We’ll study the melodies of celebrated composers like Francisco Tarrega, J.S. Bach, Miguel Llobet, Eric Satie and more.

Romance de la Amor by Anonymous
For many guitarists, this is Cupid’s arrow that makes them fall in love with classical guitar. First, I’ll show you how it sounds and then I’ll teach you the first few bars of the major section and then a quick look at the minor section to get you started. Believe it or not, no one knows who really composed this iconic piece of the guitar repertoire.

Making the Melody Sing
As I mentioned earlier, our main goal is to bring the melody out and make it “sing”. In this practice session I’ll show you how to do just that by utilizing your ring finger. This digit can typically be weaker on most hands but with time it can be properly utilized to make your melody sing.
Right Hand Position
One of the things that’s going to ensure your success with this piece is having a good right hand position. Here we’ll focus on how to make playing with the right hand not only comfortable but also how to use it to pluck the strings relaxed and with little interference.
Shifting Positions Gracefully
You may have noticed in the last few lessons that there is a lot of shifting around the neck of the guitar. This is because if you play too rigidly you can lose that lovely smooth Spanish sound. In this lesson we’ll take a look at how we can shift positions gracefully so we can keep that fluid sound.

Solid Course for Intermediate Fingerstyle

I picked this course as a Celtic guitarist who wanted to expand both repertoire and work on some technical aspects of my playing. It's been very helpful. The instructor who breaks songs down in easy ways but always with an emphasis on the melody. The so g selections (so far) are simple enough to learn pretty quickly so then it's a matter of refining them on my own with a metronome (I'd say I'm an intermediate fingerstyle player). My only gripe is that we only learn pieces of songs. Maybe that will change later in the course and perhaps the goal isn't entire songs . . . but still.
