Play Country Guitar 4: Rhythm Approaches

About this course

Welcome to Play Country Guitar 4: Rhythm Approaches for intermediate to late Intermediate students of Country guitar.

This Country Learning Path core course is presented by 2 top TrueFire educators: Jason Loughlin and Johnny Hiland.

The Rhythm Approaches curriculum is comprised of select Country guitar lessons from the educators’ existing TrueFire course libraries.

Guitarists spend 90% of their time on the bandstand playing rhythm guitar behind vocals and other musician’s solos, which is why it’s the most important aspect of your playing. Having command of a wide range of chord voicings and rhythm approaches is what distinguishes great players from the mediocre, and it’s also the number one reason that other musicians will want you in their band or invite you back to the jam. The video guitar lessons in this core course will equip you with the skills that you need to take your rhythm guitar playing to the next level.

Play Country Guitar 4: Rhythm Approaches is organized into 2 sections. In the first section, Jason Loughlin and Johnny Hiland present 12 lessons focused on essential rhythm concepts and techniques. In the second section, Jason and Johnny guide you through 9 rhythm performance studies applying many of the techniques and concepts from the first section. The educators will demonstrate the rhythm performances and then break them down for you emphasizing the techniques in play.

When you’ve completed the lessons here in Rhythm Approaches, you’ll find more lessons focused on Country rhythm guitar in Rhythm Principles, also a Play Country Guitar 4 core course.

The educators demonstrate all of the key examples over jam tracks (where and when applicable) to simulate a real-world application, in a musical context. All of the key examples are also tabbed and notated for your practice, reference and study purposes.

You’ll also get Guitar Pro files so that you can play, loop or slow down the tab and notation as you work through the lessons. Plus, you’ll have all of the available jam tracks to work with on your own.

Take as much time as you need to work through each video guitar lesson before moving on to the next lesson. If you want to dig deeper or wider into any of the topics covered in this core course, check out the recommended supplementary courses in your learning path where you’ll find more examples, techniques and insight from top TrueFire educators.

Essential Concepts
In this first section, Jason Loughlin and Johnny Hiland present 12 lessons focused on essential rhythm concepts and techniques including chord position options, modern country techniques, inversions, rockabilly approaches, syncopation, fills, hooks and much more.

TIP! Everything you work on should be started slowly, paying attention to the fine details of finger placement, minimum motion, efficient picking hand movement, and proper intonation. Then GRADUALLY increase your speed. Think baby steps. Don't try to jump from zero to 60 - take it slow. As you gradually speed up you will see other technique issues that need to be addressed. These are more easily discovered and dealt with at slow tempos. It is way harder to fix a problem that you have burned into your muscle memory than it is to just start slow and fix things along the way. So always start practicing a new thing slowly, and then build up your speed.
Three Rhythm Guitar Techniques
Three Rhythm Guitar Techniques - Carter, Country Shuffle, Country Rock is a video guitar lesson presented by Jason Loughlin and is sourced from 1-2-3 Country.

Let's start applying our new fretboard knowledge to our three country rhythm approaches.
Carter Style
Carter Style - Overview is a video guitar lesson presented by Jason Loughlin and is sourced from 1-2-3 Country.

Carter style is the most important rhythmic approach in country music. "Wildwood Flowers" changed the way guitarists accompanied voice and other instruments. It's also a style that has evolved over time and each one of its off-shoots has been a cornerstone of some of country music's sub genres. The idea here is that we are trying to create the illusion of two instruments, a bass and guitar. We do this by playing a steady bass line and filling in chords around that bass line. This is the backbone of bluegrass rhythm for flattop players. It's what Chet Atkins is doing with his thumbpick while playing melodies. If we strip away any harmony and just play single notes we have Luther Perkins style of rhythm. I'll show you three variations of this important rhythmic approach. We will learn an open, a muted and Luther Perkins approach.
Carter Style
Carter Style - Demonstration is a video guitar lesson presented by Jason Loughlin and is sourced from 1-2-3 Country.

In this demonstration of Carter style rhythm I'll show you how I adapted this style to our three I, IV, V progressions using our three movable chord shapes. We will also learn some alternating bass lines for each of the chord shapes. I'm also going to add a palm mute one time around. This is a simple embellishment that gives you a whole new sound.
Country Shuffle
Country Shuffle - Overview is a video guitar lesson presented by Jason Loughlin and is sourced from 1-2-3 Country.

The country shuffle is a huge part of the Bakersfield sound. The west coast country music sound is largely associated with Bakersfield, CA. Bands like Buck Owens and His Buckaroos with Don Rich on tele solidified the country shuffle. Two of the hallmarks of this sound are the accent on the upbeat and the walking bass line.
Country Shuffle
Country Shuffle - Demonstration is a video guitar lesson presented by Jason Loughlin and is sourced from 1-2-3 Country.

In this demonstration of the country shuffle I'll show you how to play our shuffle pattern over our three I, IV, V progressions using our three movable chord shapes as a template.

Essential rhythm the right way!

These lessons will get you on the right path for a solid foundation right from the start. I know, I’ve taken a LOT of self-taught courses over the years and kept realizing I had holes where I missed some techniques. You won't go wrong learning these progressions!
