About this course

Welcome to Play Country Guitar 3: Tools & Techniques - the third milestone of your TrueFire Learning Path journey towards becoming a solid Country guitar player.

This Country Learning Path core course is presented by 2 top TrueFire educators: Corey Congilio and Jason Loughlin.

They’ll guide your development of the essential skills and get up and running quickly -- no reading music, no boring exercises, no tedious theory to struggle through. In fact, you’ll play your way through the entire course.

In Play Country Guitar 1 and 2, you built up your vocabulary of country chords and licks; learned how to play several classic country songs; and can now solo and improvise a little bit. Here in Play Country Guitar 3: Tools & Techniques, you’ll learn a variety of killer country licks, more sophisticated chords and songs, and more country techniques to power your soloing and improvisations. For example, you’ll learn a classic country song with a waltz feel, and also learn how to Travis pick through a another popular country song. Bending licks are something you need to have in your arsenal of soloing techniques and so, you’ll learn how to make them really sing along with some pedal steel licks for your pallet of soloing options. You’ll wrap up this course with a great country solo incorporating double stops, pedal steel licks, and an open string cascading lick.

The educators demonstrate all of the key examples over jam tracks (where and when applicable) to simulate a real-world application, in a musical context. All of the key examples are also tabbed and notated for your practice, reference and study purposes.

You’ll also get Guitar Pro files so that you can play, loop or slow down the tab and notation as you work through the lessons. Plus, you’ll have all of the available jam tracks to work with on your own.

Take as much time as you need to work through each video guitar lesson before moving on to the next lesson. If you want to dig deeper or wider into any of the topics covered in this core course, check out the recommended supplementary courses in your learning path where you’ll find more examples, techniques and insight from top TrueFire educators.

Movable Chords & Waltz
Learning a variety of country music feels is an important aspect of developing your guitar playing. One of the classic sounds of country music is the waltz. Understanding the subtle differences in how to accent the rhythm of a waltz is an essential skill you need as a country guitar player. This is a great lesson to cover that ground.
Practice Session 1
We'll start out practicing this one at 95 BPM. Do it as many times as you need at this tempo before you move on.
Practice Session 2
Let's have some fun! In this Practice Session we jam with the band! Take your time, don't worry about doing it perfectly the first time, just keep going over it until you have it all down smooth. Then you are ready to move on.
Embellishing Rhythms
Sometimes a rhythm can seem a little boring if you are just doing simple strums through the same old chords. A chord progression should be alive and exciting, even if it is simple. Use these techniques to embellish a rhythm part and keep it interesting.
Practice Session 3
In this Practice Session you will be playing along with the instructor. Take your time and don't rush through it.

Practice this as many times as you need to before moving on.
Practice Session 4
OK, let's bring the band in. Here is where all that practice pays off. In this Practice Session you just have to lock in with the other instruments and make sure you are staying in the groove.

Way to get going!

These lessons will get you on the right path for a solid foundation right from the start. I know, I’ve taken a LOT of self-taught courses over the years and kept realizing I had holes where I missed some techniques. Finally, I just started over with this set of lessons when I found Truefire. It is well planned and it filled in all the missing holes!
