Play Jazz Guitar 4: Rhythm Principles

About this course

Welcome to Play Jazz Guitar 4: Rhythm Principles for intermediate to late Intermediate students of Jazz guitar.

This Jazz Learning Path core course is presented by 5 top TrueFire educators: Larry Carlton, Sheryl Bailey, Frank Vignola, Howard Morgen, and Frank Potenza.

The Rhythm Principles curriculum is comprised of select Jazz guitar lessons from the educators’ existing TrueFire course libraries.

Guitarists spend 90% of their time on the bandstand playing rhythm guitar behind vocals and other musicians’ solos, which is why it’s critical to develop solid rhythm skills. Having command of a wide range of chord voicings, rhythm patterns and creative approaches is what distinguishes great players from the mediocre, and it’s also the number one reason that other musicians will want you in their band or invite you back to the jam. The video guitar lessons in this core course will equip you with the technical and creative skills you need to take your rhythm guitar playing to the next level.

Play Jazz Guitar 4: Rhythm Principles is organized into 5 sections. In the first section, Sheryl Bailey introduces you to the principles of bebop comping. You’ll work through a series of jazz harmony applications from Frank Potenza in the second section. In Section 3, Howard Morgen presents a series of lessons focused on triads. You’ll comp your way through 5 standard jazz progressions with Frank Vignola in Section 4, and then Larry Carlton shares some comping insight and 2 performance studies in the final section.

When you’ve completed the lessons here in Rhythm Principles, you’ll find more lessons focused on Jazz rhythm guitar in Rhythm Approaches, also a Play Jazz Guitar 4 core course.

The educators demonstrate all of the key examples over jam tracks (where and when applicable) to simulate a real-world application, in a musical context. All of the key examples are also tabbed and notated for your practice, reference and study purposes.

You’ll also get Guitar Pro files so that you can play, loop or slow down the tab and notation as you work through the lessons. Plus, you’ll have all of the available jam tracks to work with on your own.

Take as much time as you need to work through each video guitar lesson before moving on to the next lesson. If you want to dig deeper or wider into any of the topics covered in this core course, check out the recommended supplementary courses in your learning path where you’ll find more examples, techniques and insight from top TrueFire educators.

Bebop Comping
In this section, Sheryl Bailey introduces you to essential bebop comping principles starting with chord templates and shell voicings. Sheryl will also guide you through three playalongs focused on four-to-the-bar comping to get your bebop comping skills up and running.

TIP! When you start to work on rhythm parts, remember that the number one thing you should be concerned with is staying in time! This might sound obvious, but sometimes it is easy to get distracted by trying to get a cool move or technique down and we forget about keeping it in time!

So always work on a rhythm part slowly at first, using a metronome to make sure the whole thing is staying in time. If you find one part where you keep losing time, then stop and just work on that part until you get it solid. Remember, rhythm is built from the ground up - so make sure you lay the foundation of a groove before you start to worry about all the fancy stuff!
Bebop Chord Template
Bebop Chord Template - Overview is a video guitar lesson presented by Sheryl Bailey and is sourced from Bebop Dojo: Essentials.

I've chosen the chord progression to the standard "Autumn Leaves" as a template to explore concepts of harmony, melodic improv, and rhythmic improv. I chose this because it has a wealth of fundamental chord movements that are common to many other tunes in the jazz repertoire. It contains two very vital harmonic patterns: II V I in major and II V I in minor. It is also an important tune to learn and memorize for your repertoire of tunes for jam sessions. Everyone around the world knows this gem.

Here I play through our chord template, which are the changes to the standard tune "Autumn Leaves". I chose this because it has a wealth of fundamental chord movements that are common to many other tunes in the jazz repertoire. It contains two very vital harmonic patterns: II V I in major and II V I in minor. I will demonstrate the use of shell voicings and a "4 to the bar" quarter note strum. This skill will develop a strong feel for the heartbeat of jazz.
Shell Voicings
Shell Voicings - Overview is a video guitar lesson presented by Sheryl Bailey and is sourced from Bebop Dojo: Essentials.

By learning how to play rhythm guitar with shell voicings you'll be able to create your own jam tracks, develop your rhythm guitar playing, and be able to accompany other musicians with these tasteful and fundamental chord sounds. They will also help you organize your fretboard and later down the road, open up your melodic playing by teaching you where the 3rds and 7ths of the chords are at all times.
Shell Voicings
Shell Voicings - Breakdown is a video guitar lesson presented by Sheryl Bailey and is sourced from Bebop Dojo: Essentials.

Shell voicings consist of the root, 3rd and 7th of the chord. They provide the most important chord sounds and have an open texture that makes them perfect for duo and trio playing.
Bebop Comping
Bebop Comping - Overview is a video guitar lesson presented by Sheryl Bailey and is sourced from Bebop Dojo: Essentials.

All the great jazz guitarists use these shell voicings and this four to the bar type of comping. With these shapes you can work on your rhythm guitar chops on any standard tune and you can start to get into real playing situations. Also it will help your single note playing because you will have a strong sense of the pulse. This revolves around working with the metronome on beats 2 and 4 to give those beats a push, or bounce. The feeling of that bounce is the foundation of a strong swing feel.

Great toolkit to improve my jazz comping

This was just what I needed to take my comping to the next level. It’s a toolkit that lets me focus on the aspects of the course that apply to my playing without having to work through everything. The tutors explain things clearly step by step and I enjoyed it.

Build rhythm foundations

Rhythm is somewhat under rated as we all chase "notes" and harmony but rhythm is arguably even more fundamental. This collection helps build a strong platform in the triumvirate of Rhythm, Melody, Harmony.

Excellent resource

This is a really great course. I am a player with deep understanding of the theoretical part of Jazz, but somehow never really managed to climb that mountain of actually playing it in a way that sounds right. It always was somewhere around, and I lacked transcribed guitar resources that show me by note by note with live examples how to actually play it right. Being 2 modules into this course, I can say that the material is both challenging and fun to play, yet it is built in gradual develpoment in complexity. I like the diversity of teachers, as it gives you a wider perspective and you can taste a little of every teacher and find what is a better approach for you and what style talks to you more.

Just what I needed

I'm not a jazz guy, but wanted to broaden my horizons, so this is perfect for me and gives a great cross section of some common/important jazz rhythm concepts without going too deep.
