About this course

Welcome to Play Jazz Guitar 3: Tools & Techniques - the third milestone of your TrueFire Learning Path journey towards becoming a solid jazz guitar player.

This Jazz Learning Path core course is presented by 3 top TrueFire educators: Tom Dempsey, Sheryl Bailey, and Frank Vignola.

They’ll guide your development of the essential skills and get up and running quickly -- no reading music, no boring exercises, no tedious theory to struggle through. In fact, you’ll play your way through the entire course.

In Play Jazz Guitar 1 and 2, you built up your vocabulary of Jazz chords and licks; learned how to play several standard jazz songs; and can now solo and improvise a little bit. Here in Play Jazz Guitar 3: Tools & Techniques, you’ll learn a variety of new techniques including more chord melody and arpeggio concepts. You’ll also work on improvising with the Major scale, tackle some Bebop, and work with more ii V I variations to spice up your harmonic content.

The educators demonstrate all of the key examples over jam tracks (where and when applicable) to simulate a real-world application, in a musical context. All of the key examples are also tabbed and notated for your practice, reference and study purposes.

You’ll also get Guitar Pro files so that you can play, loop or slow down the tab and notation as you work through the lessons. Plus, you’ll have all of the available jam tracks to work with on your own.

Take as much time as you need to work through each video guitar lesson before moving on to the next lesson. If you want to dig deeper or wider into any of the topics covered in this core course, check out the recommended supplementary courses in your learning path where you’ll find more examples, techniques and insight from top TrueFire educators.

Two Five One Variations
Having a ton of options in your bag when it comes to the iconic ii, V, I jazz chord progression is what can set great players apart from merely good ones. Dig into these options and remember to always try and come up with your own as well. Once you can play this with the band track you will start to feel like you are getting this progression to the point of being able to make it your own!
Practice Session 1
This Practice Session is at 80 BPM. Repeat as many times as you need to in order to feel comfortable at this tempo before you move on.
Practice Session 2
Let's have some fun! In this Practice Session we jam with the band! Take your time, don't worry about doing it perfectly the first time, just keep going over it until you have it all down smooth. Then you are ready to move on.
New Chords Blues
Here are some different chords to play for the blues. Just like any chord progression, the blues presents you with almost unlimited options for chord voicings, rhythmic variations etc. So playing through as many of the chords as you can until you get them down under your fingers will set you up for being able to pull out the right set of variables at any time.
Practice Session 3
In this Practice Session you will be playing along with the instructor. Take your time and don't rush through it.

Practice this as many times as you need to before moving on.
Practice Session 4
OK, let's bring the band in. Here is where all that practice pays off. In this Practice Session you just have to lock in with the other instruments and make sure you are staying in the groove.

Tools $ Techniques at the right Time

Tools $ Techniques discusses some of the often overlooked subjects at the right point in the overall Jazz course including the importance of the 251 progression, the major scale is reviewed, an intro to Bebop licks and Arpeggios. So far these courses have not been too overwhelming while at the same time they are providing enough information and practice to help improve my skills.

Good course design. Average difficulty

It’s good and organized. I like the pace of the course. It’s a bit easy for someone who already have played guitar and learned blues for a few years. But it lay a foundation for other future courses

Jazz Guitar 3: Tools and Techiques

Great grab bag of techniques - all of which are generic and can be applied in several areas of various tunes. Each has a bit of a twist and strong explanations. Different artists give a different feel to each. I found these are also great building blocks for vocab building..................

A good overview / introduction of the various styles and techniques of Jazz, including major scales, soloing, Bebop, arpeggios, and Chord melody, with excellent instructors Frank Vignola, Sheryl Bailey, & Tom Dempsey. While I'm already playing jazz tunes, this course filled in a few gaps for me. I enjoyed it🙂 .
