Play Jazz Guitar 2: Rhythm & Lead Fundamentals

About this course

Welcome to Play Jazz Guitar 2: Rhythm & Lead Fundamentals - the second leg of your TrueFire Learning Path journey towards becoming a solid jazz guitar player.

This Jazz Learning Path core course is presented by 3 top TrueFire educators: Tom Dempsey, Sheryl Bailey, and Frank Vignola.

They’ll guide your development of the essential skills and get up and running quickly -- no reading music, no boring exercises, no tedious theory to struggle through. In fact, you’ll play your way through the entire course.

In Play Jazz Guitar 1 you learned some jazz chords, rhythms, melodies and a couple of songs. Here in Play Jazz Guitar 2, you’re going to venture even further down the path with essential rhythm and lead fundamentals. You’ll learn some hip new jazz chords, walking bass lines, and how to play a ii V I progression. You’ll also learn the pentatonic scale and then how to start improvising with it.

The educators demonstrate all of the key examples over jam tracks (where and when applicable) to simulate a real-world application, in a musical context. All of the key examples are also tabbed and notated for your practice, reference and study purposes.

You’ll also get Guitar Pro files so that you can play, loop or slow down the tab and notation as you work through the lessons. Plus, you’ll have all of the available jam tracks to work with on your own.

Take as much time as you need to work through each video guitar lesson before moving on to the next lesson. If you want to dig deeper or wider into any of the topics covered in this core course, check out the recommended supplementary courses in your learning path where you’ll find more examples, techniques and insight from top TrueFire educators.

Grab your guitar and let's get started!
7th Chords & The Blues Form
In this lesson you will dig into the 7th chords of the blues form. Having a good grasp of the blues, and especially the variations of the 12 bar form is a crucial part of any jazz guitarists bag. Understanding rhythmic variations and chord options will prepare you for anything. Make sure you absorb the material here as you will use it time and time again!
Practice Session 1
Let's start this Practice Session at 80 BPM.
Practice Session 2
Let's have some fun! In this Practice Session we jam with the band! Take your time, don't worry about doing it perfectly the first time, just keep going over it until you have it all down smooth. Then you are ready to move on.
Movable 9th Chords
Here is a great lesson of movable 9th chords. The secret to being able to get to these quickly is to keep your hand relaxed and always have it close to the fretboard. Minimum motion while switching chords will keep you in time and make it much easier to get from one to the other!
Practice Session 3
In this Practice Session you will be playing along with the instructor. Take your time and don't rush through it.

Practice this as many times as you need to before moving on.
Practice Session 4
OK, let's bring the band in. Here is where all that practice pays off. In this Practice Session you just have to lock in with the other instruments and make sure you are staying in the groove.

Easy Learning

I like to learn in my own time as life is busy with work and family, so these courses are great. Also to have3 teachers on the same course I can learn in chunks of each which suits me fine.
