Speaking with Slide Guitar (JamPlay)

About this course

What if your guitar could speak as expressively as your own voice? In Speaking with Slide Guitar, world-renowned slide master Ariel Posen shows you exactly how to make that happen. This course is all about transforming your slide playing into something vocal, lyrical, and full of emotion—whether you're playing in standard or open tunings.

Through over 50 deeply focused lessons, Ariel breaks down the foundations of great slide technique and builds your vocabulary in both standard and open tunings using major, minor, and pentatonic scales. He guides you through articulation techniques like vibrato, intonation, and dynamic control, so your notes don’t just sound right—they feel right. You’ll learn how to play behind the slide, incorporate double stops and drones, and apply tasteful phrasing to your improvisation so that your playing becomes conversational, not mechanical.

Beyond technique, Ariel teaches you how to tap into your own musical instincts. You'll learn how to connect what's in your head to what comes out of your amp, building a more intuitive and expressive approach to the slide guitar. Whether you're refining your tone, creating lyrical licks, or improvising in real time, Ariel helps you break past the technical into the truly musical.

This course is your gateway to playing with greater feeling, nuance, and individuality. If you’ve ever wanted your guitar to sing the way you hear it in your heart, Speaking with Slide Guitar will get you there.

Speaking With the Slide: Series Introduction
If you could choose one technique to replicate the human voice on your guitar, it would be slide guitar. The long rich history of slide is rooted in just that: making your guitar sound like a human voice. Join Ariel Posen as he introduces us to his course, "Speaking with the Slide". This overview will let you know exactly what to expect from this course that will take you outside of your normal guitar playing box.
The Nuts and Bolts of Slide Guitar
First, there are a few things that need to be addressed before we even play a note using the slide. In this lesson, Ariel gives us his take on selecting a slide, string gauge, guitar setup and other practical topics to get you up and running with slide guitar!
Proper Hand Technique
So much of getting the slide to sound great is born out of good hand technique. From muting and the "sandwich" technique, to bar placement on the strings, Ariel puts you in the best situation to succeed with these technique tips.
The Major Scale - Standard Tuning
Playing slide is not about re-learning your instrument, it's about integrating certain techniques with your existing knowledge. In this lesson, we start down the path of that integration, with learning to play the major scale with the slide in standard tuning.

More to improve slide playing

I found the first course in slide by Ariel Posen to be helpful (I have played slide for years but am self-taught). This one is more in depth and helping even more to get me to a higher level of playing. I have found learning slide tends to lean towards open tunings and blues as opposed to standard tuning and melodic playing. This is helping in both areas.
