About this course

"When Leo Fender dreamed up the Telecaster electric guitar back in '49 or so, it's doubtful he knew what uses it would be put to, especially in the hands of someone like Redd Volkaert. The local Telecaster master is all over the guitar like grease on a pork chop, quoting jazz, country, blues, and Western swing as effortlessly as turning on the lights in the living room.”

Commander Cody, Eric Johnson, Merle Travis, Albert Lee, Vince Gill, George Jones, Buck Owens, Merle Haggard, Dwight Yokum, Trace Adkins, Tim McGraw, Allison Krause, Charlie Pride, Brad Paisley, Billy Gibbons, Sonny Landreth, Dolly Parton and a hundred other top artists that he’s played or recorded with would agree — “Redd Volkaert is a master of the Telecaster!”

We’re beyond thrilled to welcome Redd to the family with his first TrueFire course, Redd Hot Guitar! You will likewise be thrilled when Redd lifts the hood on his inimitable guitar prowess and shows you a few ear-opening tricks of the trade. We guarantee turned heads at your next gig!

Redd Hot Guitar
Hi, I'm Redd Volkaert. Welcome to Redd Hot Guitar!

I've been playing guitar a long time. I've played with a lot of bands in all styles of music. I'd like to say that I learned a lot and I'd like to share what little I got in my memory with you here in this course.

I've organized the course in two sections: The first emphasizing techniques like right-hand combinations, fusing jazz, country and blues, fills and soloing, as well as how to fit in a band better as a rhythm player. In the second section, we'll play along with tracks utilizing all of these techniques, some special phrases, and a few goofy tricks on the guitar.

Everything is tabbed and notated and you'll have all the backing tracks to work with on your own. You can loop and slow down the videos to work with the lessons at your own pace.

Grab your guitar and let's get started!
SECTION 1: Essential Concepts
In this first section, we're going to explore a whole bunch of techniques: right hand and left hand techniques, finger rolls, chicken pickin', pedal steel licks, etc. as well as some other things like the do's and don'ts when trying to fit into a band. Let's check it out!
Pick and a Finger
For the first concept, we're going to look at how to add right hand fingers while using your pick to achieve different sounds. This is a fairly popular technique with chicken pickers.
Double Stop Lines
Double stops used to spook me really bad - I couldn't quite get it together. What helped me figure it out was realizing that they're really just little bits of a chord. It's any two notes of a chord, whether that's the root and the 3rd, or the root and the 5th, or whatever. In this lesson, we'll be working on how to enhance our solos by incorporating double stops lines into them.
Mix it Up
As you can tell, there's a wide range of all sorts of double stops things that you can do - most of which I've gathered from all sorts of playing situations. It's all subjective to what you want to do with it. Let's look at some ways you can mix up your style by including double stops and add some flavor to your solo.
Rolls, Rolls, Butter Rolls
I got lotsa rolls, and you should too! As a kid, I was amazed by Chet Atkins and Merle Travis' guitar playing. I couldn't ever get the thumbpick going, so instead I used the flatpick and my fingers to simulate what they were doing. In this lesson, I'll show you a few things to work on to make your rolls bigger and better.
Bending & Vibrato
With bending strings, accuracy is the most important thing. We've all heard players who bend sharp or flat, or miss the note. Being able to bend accurately is a sign of a great guitar player, and something to definitely get down. Something to get in the habit of doing is putting all of your fingers behind the note that needs to be bent, making it a whole lot easier.

Vibrato is another technique that can be difficult as first. Each person's hand is different, so you'll end up developing your own sound - whether that's fast or slow, narrow or wide.
