Commander Cody, Eric Johnson, Merle Travis, Albert Lee, Vince Gill, George Jones, Buck Owens, Merle Haggard, Dwight Yokum, Trace Adkins, Tim McGraw, Allison Krause, Charlie Pride, Brad Paisley, Billy Gibbons, Sonny Landreth, Dolly Parton and a hundred other top artists that he’s played or recorded with would agree — “Redd Volkaert is a master of the Telecaster!”
We asked Redd Volkaert if he would put together a collection of his own favorite licks that can be played over a variety of styles. He delivered way beyond our already high expectations! We’re now thrilled to present 30 Redd Hot Licks You MUST Know!
As you play your way through this versatile vocabulary of licks, phrases, and chord moves you’ll discover that each of these licks can be twisted, turned, and otherwise tweaked to make them your own and to fit any musical setting.
”Over the years, I’ve been very fortunate to play and record across a wide variety of genres including traditional and new country, blues, jazz, rockabilly, and Western swing. Throughout this collection of 30 licks, I’ll showcase a handful of my favorite approaches for soloing and improvisation -- whatever style I happen to be playing -- using techniques like chicken pickin’, triple stop moves, licks that mimic the sound of a pedal steel, chord moves to help you get that sophisticated jazzy sound and much more.”
Redd will pass on a variety of approaches for contrary motion, counterpoint, and there’s even a handful of “those cool, weird sounding licks” too. You’ll play this collection of 30 licks over shuffles, western swing grooves, waltzes, a ballad, and two beat grooves, in a variety of keys and tempos. Redd will perform each lick over a backing track, and then break it down for you in detail.
Redd will explain and demonstrate all of the key concepts and approaches for each lick along the way. You’ll get standard notation and tabs for everything. Plus, you’ll be able to use TrueFire’s learning tool to sync the tab and notation to the video and can also loop or slow down the videos so that you can work with the lessons at your own pace. All the backing tracks are included to work with on your own as well.
Grab your guitar and let’s play some “Redd Hot licks” with Redd Volkaert!

Hey, I'm Redd Volkaert. Welcome to 30 Redd Hot Licks You MUST Know!
Over the years, I've been very fortunate to play and record across a wide variety of genres including traditional and new country, blues, jazz, rockabilly and Western swing.
Throughout this collection of 30 licks, I'll showcase a handful of my favorite approaches for soloing and improvisation - whatever style I happen to be playing - using techniques like chicken pickin', triple stop moves, licks that mimic the sound of a pedal steel, chord moves to help you get that sophisticated jazzy sound and much more.
We'll work on approaches for contrary motion, counterpoint, and there's even a handful of those cool, weird sounding licks, too. We'll play over shuffles, Western swing grooves, waltzes, a ballad and two beat grooves in a variety of keys...
I'll first perform each lick over a backing track, and then I'll break it down for you in detail. Everything is tabbed and notated. Plus, you'll be able to use TrueFire's learning tools, which sync the tab to the video and allow you to loop or slow down any segment of the video so you can work with the lessons at your own pace.
Grab your guitar and let's get started!
2Chickin' Pickin' Intro
We'll start things off with a chickin' pickin' intro over a 55-11 (V-V-I-I) progression in the key of G, all over a shuffle beat.
3Chickin' Spittin'
This one I call "Chickin' Spittin'". It's in the key of A, starting on the V - which means it's E for two bars, then to the E for two bars on the I. It's a little back-and-forth double stop move that's lots of fun!
4Oklahoma Pickin'
Lick 3 is something I picked up in Oklahoma, and still sounds a little "chickin' pickin'-y". It's in the key of A with a pretty straightforward melody. Let's check it out.
5Jump N' Spit
This one's called "Jump N' Spit". It's in the key of G, and goes over a I-IV-V progression. There's some tricky right hand stuff here paired with some double stops that we jump around with.
6Chickens in Line
Lick 5 is where you'll get your "Chickens in Line". It's in the key of C, going from the I to the IV, V and back to the I. So, C-F-G-C. Let's take a look.
7Waltz with a Triple
This one is "Waltz with a Triple" - better than a twin! It's in the key of A, focusing on the V to the I change.
Great set of licks taught by the legendary Redd Volkaert. Pure gold!
