You’ll gain more clarity on the instrument overall and expressing yourself on it will become a richer experience. The video guitar lessons in this core course will diversify your skill set and help take your playing to the next level.

Play Blues Guitar 7: Fingerstyle Approaches is organized into 2 sections. In the first section, you’ll work on the basics of Fingerstyle Blues playing. In the second section you’ll work through Performance Studies to get your chops down.

When you’ve completed the lessons here in Fingerstyle Approaches, you’ll find lessons focused on slide techniques in Slide Approaches, also a Play Blues Guitar 7 core course.

The educators demonstrate all of the key examples over jam tracks (where and when applicable) to simulate a real-world application, in a musical context. All of the key examples are also tabbed and notated for your practice, reference and study purposes.

You’ll also get Guitar Pro files so that you can play, loop or slow down the tab and notation as you work through the lessons. Plus, you’ll have all of the available jam tracks to work with on your own.

Take as much time as you need to work through each video guitar lesson before moving on to the next lesson. Fingerstyle Blues Essentials
In this first section you'll learn some of the basic techniques of fingerstyle blues, and work on a variety of cool riffs and songs to build out your repertoire. There is no better way to learn a new style than just jumping into some things that are fun to play and sound great, while at the same time are helping you build new techniques.

TIP! Everything you work on should be started slowly, paying attention to the fine details of finger placement, minimum motion, efficient picking hand movement, and proper intonation. Then GRADUALLY increase your speed. Think baby steps. Don't try to jump from zero to 60 - take it slow. As you gradually speed up you will see other technique issues that need to be addressed. These are more easily discovered and dealt with at slow tempos. It is way harder to fix a problem that you have burned into your muscle memory than it is to just start slow and fix things along the way. So always start practicing a new thing slowly, and then build up your speed.

Lesson 1 - Pre-Lesson Wrap is a video guitar lesson presented by David Hamburger and is sourced from Fingerstyle Blues Handbook 1.

The position of your right hand over the strings can make a big difference in the kind of strength and volume you're able to pick the strings with. Also, when you get your thumb out in front of your fingers, closer to the fingerboard, it makes it easier to do palm muting. Palm muting means resting the thumb side of your palm on the bass strings, right where the strings meet the bridge. It gives your bass notes a dry, thumpy sound while leaving the high strings free to ring out.

When you're picking three strings at a time with your fingers, check to make sure all three strings are ringing out at about the same volume. It's easy for the middle string of the three - in this case, the second string, which you're picking with your middle finger - to get lost in the shuffle. Try picking just the second and first string, then just the second and third string. Then add back in the first string to pick all three, and listen for the sound of the second string in the mix.

Like several other prewar bluesmen, Mississippi John Hurt made a handful of recordings in the late 1920s but didn't see widespread success as a professional musician until his "rediscovery" more than three decades later. In 1963, while others merely wondered what became of Hurt or assumed he'd passed away years ago, folk musicologist Tom Hoskins, taking the words of Hurt's "Avalon Blues" literally, got in the car, drove to Avalon, Mississippi and discovered Hurt alive and well and still playing in his own beautiful, relaxed style.
