About this course

Gypsy jazz, made legendary by Django Reinhardt, is one of the most distinctive and spirited genres in the world of guitar music. In this immersive and well-structured course, guitarist Austin Filingo offers a rich introduction to the essential techniques, chord voicings, melodic ideas, and rhythmic foundations of the Gypsy jazz and swing tradition.

Across 70+ video lessons, Austin breaks down right-hand picking mechanics, classic “La Pompe” rhythms, chromatic flourishes, and the harmonic movement behind standards like “Dinah” and “Minor Swing.” You’ll develop your command of bread-and-butter chord voicings, passing chords, melodic phrasing, and soloing concepts rooted in both major and minor tonalities. Austin also shares deep insights into chord melody, intros and outros, and the historical context that shaped this genre.

Beyond just learning songs, you’ll build a deep fretboard vocabulary—covering triads, inversions, augmented and diminished forms, and modal chord pools—all of which are demonstrated in practical, musical examples. Whether you’re a jazz guitarist looking to expand your stylistic range or a beginner curious about the rich tradition of Gypsy jazz, this course provides the tools and inspiration to elevate your playing.

What you'll learn

  • Play diminished and augmented triads in multiple inversions across the fretboard
  • Apply augmented triads in licks and whole tone contexts
  • Arrange a chord melody for the jazz standard 'Dinah' using triads and drop 2 voicings
  • Balance single note lines with chord voicings in a melody arrangement
  • Understand when to use full chord voicings vs single notes for musical effect

Highly recommended to anyone who wants to distinguish the difference between jazz, western swing and gypsy jazz styles, yes they all overlap but without these intricate details you won't sound like a gypsy jazz player, well done excellent course!
