Take 5: Groove Guitar

About this course

Groove is all around us. It’s in the pulse of our heartbeat, the connection between the listener and the music we love across virtually every genre from funk, R&B, and soul to rock, modern country, and pop.

Because of its percussive, rhythmic and melodic qualities, the guitar is central to crafting the perfect groove for any song, in any style. Carl Burnett’s Groove Guitar edition of Take 5 is your fast track to the pocket and groove you’ll want to create for virtually any style you play.

”Curtis Mayfield, Al Mckay, Charles Skip Pitts, Nile Rogers, are just a few examples of great players that originated the ‘groove guitar’ vocabulary that you hear today in contemporary music. In this course, I’ll step you through a ‘groove guitar’ primer where I’ll show you some key techniques, rhythmic approaches, and chordal embellishments. It's filled with key concepts in playing guitar with the overall conceptual idea of groove and creating music.”

After the primer, Carl will guide you through 5 Groove Guitar performance studies across a variety of musical styles, ranging from basic applications to more sophisticated and challenging approaches.

Carl will explain and demonstrate all of the key concepts and approaches along the way. You’ll get standard notation and tabs for all of the key examples and performances.

Plus, you’ll be able to use TrueFire’s learning tool to sync the tab and notation to the video and can also loop or slow down the videos so that you can work with the lessons at your own pace. All of the backing tracks are included to work with on your own as well.

Grab your guitar and let's groove with Carl Burnett!

Take 5: Groove Guitar
Hi, I'm Carl Burnett and welcome to this Groove Guitar edition of Take 5.

Groove is all around us. It's in the pulse of our heartbeat, the connection between the listener and the music we love across virtually every genre from funk, R&B, and soul to rock, modern country and pop.

Because of its percussive, rhythmic and melodic qualities, the guitar is central to crafting the perfect groove for any song, in any style.

Curtis Mayfield, Al Mckay, Charles Skip Pitts, Nile Rogers, are just a few examples of great players that originated the "groove guitar" vocabulary that you hear today in contemporary music.

In this course, I'll step you through a "groove guitar" primer where I'll show you some key techniques, rhythmic approaches, and chordal embellishments.

We'll then play our way through 5 Groove Guitar performance studies across a variety of musical styles, ranging from basic applications to more sophisticated and challenging approaches.

All of the performance studies are tabbed and notated and you'll have the jam tracks to work with on your own. You can loop and slow down the videos so you can work with the lessons at your own pace.

Groove Guitar Primer
I encourage you to watch the whole primer, it's filled with key concepts in playing guitar with the overall conceptual idea of groove and creating music. Here are links to some of the examples I referenced:

"Long Train Running" by the Doobie Brothers (Though I played in E minor, the original key is G minor)
"Little Wing" by Jimi Hendrix
Curtis Mayfield - Live at the Bitter End (Curtis along with Craig McMullen on guitar is a must listen)

Groove guitar

A nice course on rhythm funk guitar. The course is fun and entertaining and Carl Burnett is inspiring. I missed a more thorough explanation at some points (e.g. mute strings) or more hints for practicing difficult parts. Overall, the course is highly recommendable.
