Funk House: Tight Rhythm

About this course

Guitarists are often required to come up with a "tight" rhythm part. This is especially true with funk, soul and classic R&B music, but "tight" rhythm parts are also frequently called for in blues, rock, jazz, and country music as well. Carl Burnett’s Tight Rhythm edition of Funk House will funkify your rhythm parts whatever style you prefer playing.

”A "tight" rhythm part consists of two key elements; 2 or 3 note chords such as triads, double or triple stops. AND a percussive, often-muted rhythmic approach. Both elements designed to NOT conflict with what the bass player and other musicians are doing. In short, a part that locks into the pocket.

Chord construction, rhythmic approaches, and of course, groove are all critical considerations when composing your own "tight" parts for a particular tune. We'll dive deep into all of those essential ingredients. We'll then craft tight rhythm parts together and play them over 10 backing tracks in a variety of feels, tempos, and keys.”

Carl will explain and demonstrate all of the key concepts and approaches along the way. You’ll get standard notation and tabs for all of the performance studies. Plus, you’ll be able to use TrueFire’s learning tools to sync the tab and notation to the video lesson. You can also loop or slow down the videos so that you can work with the lessons at your own pace. All of the backing tracks are included to work with on your own as well.

Grab your guitar and let’s get ‘tight’ with Carl Burnett!

Funk House: Tight Rhythm
Hi, I'm Carl Burnett. Welcome to this Tight Rhythm edition of Funk House!

One, Four, Five Twist
We're going to jump right in on a blues in the key of E. That means E7 on the I, going to A7 and a sus V chord. The "twist" is going to be going back to the I, then to the G, and then to an F, then back to the I.

I'll show you some voicings that will fit on top of the groove to help you get away from the big, barre chord shapes. Let's have some fun with it!
One, Four, Five Twist
I think this is a cool place to start. Voicing wise, the thing to take note of is the use of seconds. These add a color that I think can make a rhythm part pop. Also pay close attention to have a tight articulation with your fretted hand. You get this by being quick off the frets as if they are too hot to touch.

Crawfish Groove
Now we're going to look at another feel here - this one's going to have a New Orleans 16th note swing to it. For the changes, we'll be in G7. There's a B section that will go to B minor, then to E7, then to A minor, C minor and back to the I. So, let's see how we can put some of our funky voicings on top of it.
Crawfish Groove
There is a subtlety to the rhythm in this one to hone in on. Finding the amount of swing to lock with the beat is what you should be feeling for. Also take note of me making use of just adding to one note to the voicing to create melodic themes.

Getting into the groove!

This is the first course I have done with Carl Burnett so you are never sure how you are going to like it. I am only half-way through it but am getting so much from it. He is a great teacher and taking me into areas where i needed to tighten my technique. Carl keeps it flowing and his demonstrations are so good. I expect i will probably move onto a few more of his!

Funk House - Tight Rhythm

Carl Burnett is a solid guitar player with lots of knowledge. I bought all of Carl's courses available on Truefire because of the way he constructs the courses. I spent my formative years on theory and focusing on exceptional lead playing but realised that my rhythm guitar skills do not match my lead skills. Funk focuses on timing and groove and Funk House Tighr Rhythm is perfect for me to acquire these aspects of rhythm guitar playing. The music is fresh and the course is progressive in approach which makes it easy to succeed in learning the lessons. Buy this course if you want to improve as a rhythm guitarist! Buy this course if you want to be a much better musician!

Love it!

I love this course. I bought it to improve my rhythmic techniques, but I'm learning a lot more: chord voicings, right-hand endurance and muting. The teacher breaks down every part and tries to explain the "feel" he wants to convey for all the songs, besides there are fun backing tracks to jam along. Thanks to these concepts, creating rhythmic part it's never been easier.

too funky!

Really cool course and excellent teacher. This one has some tracks that you have no choice but tap your feet on the floor and make sure your right hand doesn't stop. At the end of course my right hand was much more loose and I felt more confident playing this style of music.
