Guitar Lab: Fretboard Visualization Vol. 2

About this course

Welcome to Guitar Lab: Fretboard Visualization Vol. 2. In this group of lessons, we'll view the various harmonies that reside in the Ionian and Dorian modes. This will be accomplished by thinking of each chord formula as a subset of the scale.

You'll then apply these groups of notes over the different jam tracks. We'll also look at intervals and relate them to fretboard "shapes". You'll then be able to apply these concepts to the E Phrygian, F Lydian, G Mixolydian and A Aeolian jam tracks which are provided in the last four lessons.

Grab your guitar, and let's get started!

What you'll learn

  • Apply multiple pentatonic scales (B minor, C# minor, F# minor) over B Dorian
  • Create varied solos using triads, arpeggios, and scalar ideas
  • Use power chords and sus2 chords from parent scale degrees
  • Plot out modal information independently on the fretboard
  • Recognize Dorian harmony by ear (minor chord with extensions)

Ionian Harmonies
In Chart #11, I've listed various harmonies that should be veiwed as subsets of the Ionian mode. Here I'll demonstrate various voicings for the chords listed in the Ionian Harmonies chart.
Major Pentatonic
The major pentatonic scale is another name for a condensed 6/9 chord. The formula is 1, 2, 3, 5, 6. Here I'll demonstrate various layouts for the major pentatonic scale.
D Dorian
The D Dorian mode is the C scale from D to D. Therefore, if you know where the notes are for the key of C, you also know where the notes are for D Dorian. Where things change in terms of labels are the scale degrees. The formula for the Dorian mode is: 1, 2, b3, 4, 5, 6, b7. When you apply this formula to a D major scale you end up with D(1), E(2), F(b3), G(4), A(5), B(6), and C(b7). In this lesson, I'll demonstrate various layouts for the D Dorian mode.
B Dorian
This is a quiz to check your understanding of the Dorian mode: Chart #1 reveals that B Dorian is mode II of the key of A. Plot out the notes in A major on a blank diagram. The key signature for the key of A is three sharps (F#, C#, G#). Therefore, the A major scale would be spelled: A, B, C#, D, E, F#, G#. Those are the notes that you would plot out on the left hand diagram. The right hand diagram should be labeled B Dorian. Every B will be a 1, Every C# will be a 2, every D will be a b3, every E will be a 4, every F# will be a 5, every G# will be a 6, and every A will be a b7. Practice playing over the B Dorian track using the map that you've plotted out.
Fretboard Shapes Pt. 1
This lesson will demonstrate various layouts on the fretboard of m2 and M2 intervals.
Fretboard Shapes Pt. 2
This lesson will demonstrate various layouts on the fretboard of m3 and M3 intervals.

Good for all levels

There is always something good to learn from Brads classes. These shorter format lessons are a good way to enforce a particular topic. Seeing the fretboard better is always a goal no matter what level of player.

I do recommend.

Brad Carlton knows his way around the fretboard, and conveys his knowledge to the student in a very well organized step by step way. I do recommend.

Thanks for making the map for me!

Being able to apply music theory to the fingerboard and then being able to play what I want and hear in my head on my guitar has long been a goal for me. Thanks’ Brad for making that a reality! I can finally close my eyes and go.
