About this course

NOTE: TrueFire Foundry courses are independently-produced courses presented by a hand-picked selection of top-notch artists and educators from around the world. Filmed in the educator’s own studio, Foundry courses bring fresh educational concepts and very effective teaching methodologies to TrueFire Students.

Hello I'm Chris Buono — welcome to my TrueFire Foundry course, Guitar Gym Weekly Workouts Vol. 2, which I produced in my own studio.

Guitar Gym Weekly Workouts Vol. 2 continues this ongoing series of Courses with eight unique challenges covering myriad styles for you to work with. In this second volume, you will find Workouts that help develop odd time comping as well as voice led comping, advanced chord changes, bending, hybrid picking with a focus on fret hand rolling, tapping, harp harmonics, and string skipping.

With this collection of single note and chordal studies that employ basic to advanced techniques you get a wide variety of skills to hone. Guitar Gym caters to chops building endeavors across the globe and gave life to the popular Guitar Gym Course Series. At the core of Guitar Gym is what I call "Workouts."

Workouts are specifically designed challenges that help develop your playing so you can become the monster you want to be. There are hundreds of them across five Levels of Skills such as Alternate Picking, Hybrid Picking, Legato, Tapping, Triads and more.

This Guitar Gym Weekly Workouts course is made up of a unique type of workout called "Weekly Workouts" where I design, produce and unleash a spontaneous challenge every week. While meant to be mildly difficult they're still playable, concise and fun to work with.

This is perfect for busier students who are on the go a lot and sometimes just want a bite-size morsel to chew on during a hectic week. As for those deep in the shed, Weekly Workouts provide them a change of pace and something fresh every week. They range from Skills already built into Guitar Gym to ones I'm developing for the 'Gym to ones I'm working on myself for my own recordings and gigs!

I'll open the video with a quick summary of what's to come. Then, I'll play the Workout at half speed. This performance will be followed by a detailed break down that leads right into me playing the Workout at the intended tempo I hope to see you work it up to. Guitar Pro files as well as a PDF files come with each Weekly Workout.

All you'll need is a metronome, your axe and the desire to get better. You can work at your own pace. If you need help establishing that pace - I got you covered. If you need advice on approaching the Workout - I'm on it. If you complete the Workout and want to expand on it - I'm all over it!

Ready to get started? Grab your guitar and let’s get dig in!

NOTE! Chris Buono organized the course into 8 weekly sections for those students that prefer to have a specified regimen of material across a specified time schedule. However, for those students who prefer to work at their own pace, or even skip around you are certainly encouraged to approach the course in that way as well.

Guitar Gym Weekly Workouts: Vol. 2
Welcome to the Guitar Gym Weekly Workouts series! These courses are made up of eight weekly challenges I give my online classroom students in the mighty Guitar Gym through TrueFire's Online Private Lessons program. To get the full gist of what's behind Weekly Workouts, let me give you a little background info...

Guitar Gym is my game-changing TrueFire Online Classroom that caters to chops building endeavors across the globe and gave life to the popular Guitar Gym Course Series. Guitar Gym has a lot to offer, but at the core is what I call "Workouts." Workouts are specifically designed challenges that help develop your playing so you can become the monster you want to be. There are hundreds of them across five Levels of Skills such as Alternate Picking, Hybrid Picking, Legato, Tapping, Triads. and more.

The Guitar Gym Weekly Workouts series are made up of a unique type of Workout from the Gym called "Weekly Workouts" where I design, produce, and unleash a spontaneous challenge every week for my Gym members. While Weekly Workouts are meant to be mildly challenging, the priority is to make them playable, concise, and fun to work with. This is perfect for my busier members who are on the go a lot and sometimes just want a bite-size morsel to chew on during a hectic week. As for members deep in the shed, Weekly Workouts provide a change of pace and something fresh every week. They range from skills already built into Guitar Gym to ones I'm developing for the Gym to ones I'm working on myself for my own recordings and gigs.

Here in Volume 2, you'll find Workouts that help develop odd time comping as well as voice led comping, advanced chord changes, bending, hybrid picking with a focus on fret hand rolling, tapping, harp harmonics, and string skipping. With this collection of single note and chordal studies that employ basic to advanced techniques you get a wide variety of skills to hone. What's more, you get to see me play acoustic on some of my prized Taylor guitars.

The setup of each Weekly Workout is consistent: I'll open with a quick summary of what's to come, then I'll play the Workout at half speed. This performance will be followed by a detailed break down that leads right into me playing the Workout at the intended tempo I hope to see you work it up to.

I provide a Guitar Pro file, as well as a PDF file with each Weekly Workout. From there all you need is a metronome, your axe, and the desire to get better.

How to Workout Weekly
Let's get your fingers playing the weekly workout at hand. Feel it out, get to know it, pick it apart, analyze it, and finally take control and learn it.
Weekly Workout #9
Volume 2 kicks off with a Weekly Workout dealing with odd time feel! Odd time is not something that should not be feared. In fact, odd time feels are a lot of fun to study and play. Seriously, if you can play in "4" you can play in anything with practice.

This Workout is split in three parts. Each two-bar line is in an odd time signature starting with 3/4 followed by 5/4 and 7/4. The key is to grab onto the 3/4 riff because that "rhythmic riff"  or, better yet, ostinato, is the backbone of the next two. Using ostinatos is a great way to learn how to play in odd times as well as other feels. The three riffs are all based off comp feels I use over Dave Brubeck's "Take "Five."

For the gear heads wondering where you can find out more about the guitar in this video: Downes Guitars. These are amazing hand-built instruments built in Portland, Oregon. And, yes, this is from the same builder that made the orange guitar you see in 60 Electric Guitar Techniques You MUST Know and all over 30 Funk Rhythms You MUST Know, including the cover. As for the metronome app I mention: Time Guru.

Weekly Workout #10
While the first Weekly Workout had a strong chordal element, this one does even more so! Weekly Workout #10 will challenge a few different aspects of your fret hand technique including barring, using your thumb to fret notes and stretching. To play this eight bar riff, you'll need to drop your low E string down two whole steps to C.

The first half of the Workout contains ideas born of a chord melody brainstorm with a Skype student. Inspiration for the tuning came from a John Mayer tune I'm shedding for a Hal Leonard project. Same goes for some of the voicings in the second half. You just never know where ideas will present themselves. Good stuff!

Weekly Workout #11
Of all the skills to work in these Weekly Workouts, bending will be the one I revisit the most. Weekly Workout #11 bends its way through an A7 arpeggio that's played in two different positions - 5th and 12th positions - with a high bend to the root to cap it off. The challenge to your bending intonation is done with half approach bends to chord tones almost all the way through the lick. To make it happen, you'll need to push strings both up (common) and down (not-so-common) and play most of the bends with one finger. In the end, it makes for a very cool sounding lick and a heck of a Workout!

Weekly Workout #12
This week's Workout is based on two techniques: hybrid picking and fret hand rolling. It also incorporates fundamentals from the infamous 7-Tone program I teach both privately and on Skype. There are more than a few Workouts in the Guitar Gym that make use of 7-Tone principles. More info can be found on my website via the link below. You'll also find a link to more info on the very awesome Novax guitar I play in the video, too. Finally, if you need help with hybrid picking, be sure to check out my Guitar Gym | Hybrid Picking course.

The aforementioned components are applied to four root position pentatonic scales that ascend up the neck in whole steps. Careful application of hybrid picking and rolling are required. Be sure to listen carefully when I explain how intervallic concepts are applied to pentatonic scales so you're not thinking I'm nuts as I call out the intervals I'm playing!

* Pay no mind to the multiple time signatures.

Weekly Workout #13
Tapping is what this Weekly Workout is all about. This four bar lick in 6/4 was inspired by my old friend and former Berklee colleague, Don Lappin (aka Tappin' Lappin). While we're not totally copping Don's incredible technique, this lick will challenge you nonetheless. You'll notice I have a string dampener device near my Vigier Excalibur Special's headstock. That is a Gruv Gear FretWrap, which I highly recommend if you're interested in trying out string dampeners. Click here for more details.

* Warning: If you don't tap a whole lot, but get really inspired by this lick to do so make sure you ease into it and not overdo it. Otherwise, you'll have a not-so-great feeling in whatever pick hand finger you decide to tap with akin to when you first started playing and starting tearing up your fret hand fingertips! If you're looking to help start or even bolster a tapping technique, check out my Guitar Gym | Tapping course.
