Blues Guitar Identity

About this course

If you’ve ever borrowed phrases, tones, or techniques from your favorite blues players but still felt unsure of what makes your own playing unique, you’re not alone. The missing piece isn’t more licks—it’s learning how to take what inspires you and turn it into something personal.

In Blues Guitar Identity, Davy Knowles shares his own journey on the instrument and the influences that helped shape his sound. Through performances, breakdowns, and real-world playing insights, you’ll see how he approaches phrasing, touch, tone, rhythm, and feel—and how to combine those elements with your own musical inspirations to craft a voice that’s distinctly yours.

“Blues is about expression. It’s not just what you play, it’s how you play it—and how you make it your own,” says Davy.

Along the way, you’ll explore:

  • How to shape solos that feel expressive and intentional
  • Using vibrato, bends, rakes, and dynamics to bring emotion into your playing
  • Hybrid picking, fingerstyle, and volume swell techniques for added texture
  • Creative rhythm and comping approaches to strengthen your feel and groove
  • Blending major, minor, and melodic ideas for more expressive phrasing
  • Developing riffs, parts, and ideas that can grow into full songs
You’ll also get full access to TrueFire’s learning tools, including synced tab and notation, slow motion, looping, and jam tracks—so you can dig in, experiment, and make these ideas your own.

Grab your guitar, and let’s get started.

Blues Guitar Identity
I'm Davey Knowles. All of our favorite guitarists build their sound from the players who inspire them, then incorporate those ideas into something uniquely their own. Together, we'll explore my favorite approaches to phrasing, tone, rhythm, technique, and solo construction. The same tools I've used to shape my own voice.

You'll learn how to build expressive solos that tell a story. Use bends, rakes, and dynamics to add grit and emotion. Mix pentatonic and harmonic minor flavors to deepen your blues vocabulary with a Celtic flair. Incorporate hybrid picking and fingerstyle textures for articulation, and pull from your favorite players, internalize their ideas, and transform them into your own voice.

By the end, you won't just know more licks. You'll have a process for absorbing inspiration, personalizing it, and creating music that sounds like you. So grab your guitar, then let's get started.
Using Your Musical Inspirations
In this lesson we will cover how to listen like a sponge and use your favorite records and influences as a roadmap. We will talk about tracing inspiration back through artists and learning what comes naturally to you so you have a home base while you grow.
Vibrato
In this lesson we will cover vibrato as a core part of your identity and how different players approach it. We will look at three main styles and when to use each one depending on feel and where you are on the neck.
"Strange Dude" | Vibrato
In this lesson we will cover how vibrato choices shape the arc of a solo in a real musical setting. We will talk about starting measured building intensity and choosing the right vibrato for the moment.
"Strange Dude" | Vibrato
In this lesson we will cover a full performance example where vibrato is used to create emotion and momentum. Listen for how the vibrato widens and tightens as the solo develops.
"Strange Dude" | Vibrato
In this lesson we will cover what happened in the performance and why those vibrato choices worked. We will highlight wider vibrato in the middle of the neck and tighter Clapton style vibrato up high when space runs out.
Vibrato
In this lesson we will cover an easy daily vibrato workout you can do unplugged while watching TV. We will cycle through all fingers and strings so vibrato becomes second nature.
