Chord Navigator: CAGED Embellishments

About this course

In Rob Garland’s first edition of Chord Navigator, you focused on CAGED triads and worked on applying major, minor, augmented, and diminished shapes all across the fretboard. The second edition took things to the next level with the addition of major seventh, minor seventh, and dominant seventh shapes to your CAGED chord vocabulary.

In this CAGED Embellishments edition, you’ll delve into the type of chordal embellishments used by legendary guitarists such as Steve Cropper, Jimi Hendrix, James Burton, Prince, and Stevie Ray Vaughan. These simple, yet powerful devices will significantly raise the quality of your rhythm playing, blur the line between comping and soloing, and make you sound like a pro.

”I’ve organized the course into two sections. In the first section, we’ll explore ways to evoke harmonic color and movement from your CAGED major chord shapes. For example, we’ll take a look at utilizing double stops in diatonic thirds, sliding fourths, and ways to combine them over changes. We’ll also examine suspended chord embellishments and open string extensions.

In the second section, we’ll dig into minor chord territory with atmospheric sixth embellishments ideal for blues comping, voice leading, and minor add nines and elevens. Finally, we’ll combine embellishments over a chord progression containing major, minor, and dominant chords.”

Rob will explain and demonstrate all of the key concepts and approaches along the way. You’ll get standard notation and tabs for all of the performance studies. Plus, you’ll be able to use TrueFire’s learning tools to sync the tab and notation to the video lesson. You can also loop or slow down the videos so that you can work with the lessons at your own pace. All of the backing tracks are included to work with on your own as well.

Chord Navigator: CAGED Embellishments
Hi, I'm Rob Garland and welcome to Chord Navigator 3: CAGED Embellishments.

In Chord Navigator: CAGED Triads, we explored the power of triads as a rhythm and comping device. In Vol 2: CAGED Sevenths, we added 7th chords to your CAGED vocabulary, giving you a much richer array of sounds to build and apply across a variety of rhythm guitar styles. In this edition of Chord Navigator, we'll delve into the ultra cool chordal embellishments that nobody seems to want to tell you about!

These simple, yet powerful rhythmic devices that spice up your chords include double-stops, hammer-ons/pull-offs, slides and bends. This approach will significantly raise the quality of your rhythm playing, blur the line between rhythm and lead and make you sound like a pro! These types of embellishments are what incredible guitarists such as Steve Cropper, Jimi Hendrix, James Burton, Prince and Stevie Ray Vaughan all have in common.

The course includes jam tracks across various genres of music for you to play-along with, so you can quickly make these hip embellishments part of your everyday playing and practically guarantee your call back at jam sessions and/or gigs. There'll be plenty of real life musical examples and applications to work with. You'll have diagrams, tab and standard notation, all of the rhythm tracks to explore and you can loop and slow down the videos to work at your own pace.

How the Course Works
Before we get started, here I'll talk a bit about how the course is set up, and how to use the course to make it most effective for your study.
Embellishing Major Chords
Let's start by looking at ways to embellish major chords in the CAGED positions. These include double stops with intervals of 3rd's, 4th's, 6th's, fills based around the major scale/ major pentatonic scale, adding suspended chord tensions, playing rhythmic ideas off of small string sets, hammer on/pull off's, slides and other stylistic touches.
Diatonic 3rd Scales: C Shape
Playing 3rd's as double stops inside the C shape for the diatonic key of D major. The 3rd's follow the major scale degrees harmonized as chords so MAJ-min-min-MAJ-MAJ-min-min. The last doublestop (vii chord) is minor, not diminished because you are only playing the R and b3rd, no 5th. I'll play through the D major scale in the C shape and explain where the 3rd's are.
Diatonic 3rd Scales: C Shape
Playing 3rd's as doublestops inside the C shape for the diatonic key of D major on 2 adjacent strings. Notice I keep the fingering the same as when I play the major scale.
Diatonic 3rd Scales: C Shape
Play along with me as I play 3rd's as doublestops inside the C shape for the key of D major. Notice I'll play above and below the D to use all the 3rd's available in that position.
Diatonic 3rd Melodies: C Shape
Exploring melodic ideas over a D chord using 3rd's as doublestops built from the major scale inside the C CAGED shape.

Love Rob's CAGED series. . .

Rob is an excellent instructor - even though I have been playing for 40 years, I find lots of useful nuggets in his lessons. Highly recommended.

Insightful with lightbulbs.

This was such an enjoyable course with Rob’s presentation style and methodical breakdown on theory concepts. Excellent instructor and has this knack of breaking down concepts and connecting the dots into simplified and sophisticated steps. More importantly the practical application of this knowledge into the playalongs is fun and rewarding. Would like to see the Navigator series continue to gain more insights from this instructor and his vision and teaching methods of how the fretboard connects. Not everyone can get around the fretboard with a GPS like vision but this course has set off street lights in the neighbourhoods of embellishments. Impressed.
