Chord Navigator 2: CAGED Sevenths

About this course

In the first edition of Rob Garland’s Chord Navigator: CAGED Triads, you explored the power of triads as a rhythm and comping device. You worked with the CAGED system to quickly construct and play major, minor, diminished and augmented triads using the CAGED chord system.

Here, in this CAGED Sevenths edition of Chord Navigator, Rob adds 7th chords to your CAGED vocabulary, giving you a much richer array of sounds to build and apply across a variety of rhythm guitar styles. Pop, rock, classic American Songbook tunes, blues, and jazz standards are written using major 7th, minor 7th, and dominant 7th chords, so there'll be plenty of real-life musical applications to apply the principles and approaches presented in this CAGED Sevenths edition of Chord Navigator.

"I’ve organized this course into two sections.  In the first section, we’ll focus on both CAGED major and minor 7th chords.  Then in the second section, to broaden your harmonic palette, we’ll add dominant seventh chords to the mix.  For each chord type, we’ll play our way through a series of exercises designed to explore chord voicings, their inversions, and a handful of real-world, creative applications you can use to navigate the fretboard.”

Each of the sections features overviews, demonstrations, creative applications, and playalong sessions designed to help you immediately apply the key learnings in a musical context.

Rob will explain and demonstrate all of the key concepts and approaches along the way.  You’ll get standard notation and tabs for each of the performances. Plus, Rob includes all of the backing tracks for you to work with on your own. In addition, you’ll be able to loop or slow down any of the videos so that you can work with the lessons at your own pace.

Grab your guitar and let’s navigate those 7ths with Rob Garland!

Chord Navigator 2: CAGED Sevenths
Hi, I'm Rob Garland and welcome to Chord Navigator 2: CAGED Sevenths. As explored in my previous TrueFire course Chord Navigator: CAGED Triads (released in 2016), the Chord Navigator system showed you how to quickly and easily construct and play major, minor, suspended, diminished and augmented triads, in any key, anywhere on the fretboard using the CAGED chord system.

In Chord Navigator 2, we'll add 7th chords to your existing vocabulary, giving you a much richer array of sounds to construct and apply. You'll understand how to build and apply CAGED 7th chords in a variety of musical contexts, demystifying them as we go: pop, rock, classic American songbook tunes, as well as blues and jazz standards written using major, minor and dominant 7th chords. So, there'll be plenty of real life musical applications to work with!

You'll have diagrams, tab and standard notation, and ALL of the rhythm tracks to explore. Soon you'll be able to navigate ANY chord chart in any genre! So, once again let's set sail...
Major & Minor 7th Chords
By adding the 7th degree of the major scale to a major triad, we create a major 7th chord. By adding a b7 to a minor triad, we create a minor 7th chord. Major and minor 7ths are sprinkled throughout popular songs by bands such as Pink Floyd, Steely Dan, Led Zeppelin and so on. They can provide a richer tonal quality than standard major or minor triads.
Major 7th Chords (MAJ7) C-A-G-E-D
Major 7th (Maj7) chords are built from the root, 3rd, 5th and 7th degree of the major scale. If you take the note C as your root note, for example, the 3rd note of the C major scale is an E, the 5th is a G and the 7th is a B. Play these three notes together and you have a Cmaj7 chord. The 5th can be omitted and the chord would still be a Maj7. As with triads, a Maj7 chord can be moved though all 5 C-A-G-E-D shapes, which I will demonstrate next.
C Major 7th Chord C-A-G-E-D
By moving the open chord shapes for C-A-G-E-D up the neck, the same Maj7 chord can be played in different positions. I'll demonstrate by playing a Cmaj7 chord in the 5 C-A-G-E-D positions.
C Major 7th Chord C-A-G-E-D
Play along with me by strumming five Cmaj7 chords based on the open C-A-G-E-D chord shapes.
C Major 7th C-A-G-E-D Inversions
Look at the notes inside the smaller Cmaj7 chord voicings you've just played. Note that the 3rd inversion has the 7th in the bass. In the example of Cmaj7, it's the note B. When playing a triad, you can leave out the 5th or the root as long as you have a bass note.
C Major 7th C-A-G-E-D Inversions
Here are some examples of musical applications based off of the Cmaj7 C-A-G-E-D inversions, which can be used in different musical genres, such as rock, pop folk and soul/R&B. Notice how the smaller C-A-G-E-D voicings work well with bass lines and riffs. Choosing the voicing affects the whole mood of the song.

Suited to beginners

Dont want to sound phony, but if i had to start over, I would start learning guitar with this course. It just open up the 'tiny' guitar sound in songs i've heard. Tq TF, tq Rob.

ONE OF THE BEST!

Having studied with numerous world-class music educators, I can tell you that Rob Garland is one of the best around. I'm working my way through his courses and the clarity of his explanations is top notch. His examples are instantly applicable to real world situations, not some nebulous theoretical concepts or impractical voicings. Any educators who teach the CAGED system should watch Mr. Garland's videos and take copious notes on how to convey this fretboard knowledge. Highly recommended!
