Rock Sauce for Rhythm Guitar

About this course

There once was a time when lead guitar was everything and the rhythm guitarist in the band didn't really matter in the overall mix. The slot was usually filled by somebody's brother or a bud of the band who also happened to have a van. Those days are long gone (no matter how cool your van may be).

Today, it's all about rhythm guitar. You're simply not getting the gig unless you have solid rhythm guitar chops, and you won't develop those chops without excellent guidance and some serious shed time. We can't be there to lock you in your practice studio, but Jennifer Batten will over-deliver the excellent guidance requirement with Rock Sauce: Rhythm Guitar.

Jennifer is extraordinarily diverse, creative and talented. She played rhythm and lead guitar on Michael Jackson's Bad, Dangerous and History world tours. She played lead and rhythm guitar for three years in Jeff Beck's band. She performed and recorded with dozens of other top artists and has released three of her own albums to critical acclaim. She is an amazing multi-media artist pioneering a new school of musical performance. Jennifer is also the consummate educator and the proof is in the pudding right here in Rock Sauce: Rhythm Guitar.

Jennifer's highly enlightening interactive curriculum for rock rhythm guitar is organized into two sections. In the first section, she steps you through 21 essential concepts and techniques: Chord Scales, Interval Shapes, Understanding Your Role, Dynamics, Strumming, Single Line Comping, Power Chords, Fingerpicking Patterns, Pick and Fingers Combined, Funk Skanking, Chordal Capo Technique, Chords: Natural Harmonics, Harmonics & Notes, Tapping Harmonics, Permutating History, Hand Separation, Partial Chords, Gaining Stage Experience, Personality Nuance, Groove and Adding Effects.

In the second section, you will work through 14 rhythm guitar studies that Jennifer prepared, which apply all of the concepts and techniques presented in the first section: 4th Chords, Permutations, Fingerpicking with Moving Bass, Arpeggiated Chords, Power Chords and Riffs, Upbeat Chips, Reggae Style Upbeat Chips, Question & Answer, Percussive Tapping, Pick & Fingers, Building a Section, Natural Harmonics Groove, Whammy Bar and Combining Techniques.

Each of the rhythm studies are presented with their own jam tracks. Jennifer first performs the rhythm part and then breaks the part down section-by-section, technique-by-technique. You will then work with the jam tracks to learn the part as written and performed (it's all tabbed and notated) and then apply the concepts and techniques to craft your own rhythm parts.

Jennifer's Rock Sauce: Rhythm Guitar goes way beyond revealing the underlying infrastructure of her own signature style -- she unlocks the code for contemporary rock rhythm guitar itself with a framework of concepts and techniques that you will draw on and create with as you craft your own signature style.

Grab your guitar, hit the shed and pour the sauce on!

Rock Sauce for Rhythm Guitar
Rhythm guitar can be so much more than wallpaper on which to put a vocal line or instrumental melody. You should put as much creativity into it as you would with any other aspect of music. You should be able to remove the melody and still hear something interesting. "Rock Sauce for Rhythm Guitar" gives you a myriad of ideas and techniques to draw from to spice up your rhythm playing. You wouldn't want a plate of just spaghetti noodles for dinner would you? If you add sauce, it's so much better, and if you add a great sauce with a few unexpected elements, it can be an ultra memorable experience.
SECTION 1:
I begin this section with some music theory, for those interested in knowing where chords come from. Having this understanding will help you make sense of chord progressions as opposed to just memorizing what seems like random chords for songs. I then jump into a philosophy about your role as a rhythm player, followed by a great variety of techniques you can choose to use to help keep things interesting.
Chord Chemistry
The difference between understanding chord chemistry and just knowing a handful of chords, is like the difference between being given a fish and learning how to fish. Once you understand the chord recipes, you can not only build your own chords, but understand the ingredients of the ones you already know, and alter them as you choose.
Chord Scales
Chord scales are derived from diatonic scales. There are only 3 types of chords; major, minor and dominant. Any chord name you’ll ever find, will fall into one of those 3 categories. Once you understand the order and types of chords in a chord scale, you can then decipher what key any given progression is in, and thus know what scales to play over the chords when soloing. This knowledge will also help you choose chord progressions that make sense when you're composing.
Interval Shapes
Memorizing the shapes of intervals is a worthwhile effort. Once you do, you’ll be able to quickly decipher the chord tones in chords you already know, and be able to easily add extensions or alterations to them. If you don’t already know how to play a chord you see on a chart, you can create it visually by knowing 1) its ingredients i.e. root, minor or major 3rd, 5th, minor or major 7th and 2) combining the interval shapes you need. In this video segment I play random intervals and then say what they are. To quiz yourself, hit pause as soon as I play a new interval so you can come up with the answer.
Understanding Your Role
I think it’s important for a guitarist to understand their role in being hired for a band. Although you may spend all your time working on solos, and listening only to soloists, in most situations solos are going to be less than 10% of what’s required of you. When I played with Michael Jackson and Jeff Beck, I was hired on as a support role. Although I played several solos a night in each band, the majority of my time was spent comping. In a band, you are part of a team and should have the attitude of a team player in order for it to feel like a well oiled machine with all the parts working well together.
Dynamics
A very important element that is often overlooked especially by younger players, is the use of dynamics. Always consider playing much quieter in the verses and in the beginning of solos. If you stay at full force all the way through the song you loose the dramatic impact you could have had, and the listener gets fatigued. The impact of the variations of sections is also diminished. A tune should breathe with ebbs and flows. Dynamics are a strong element that Nirvana brought to the table for example, and it resonated with people in a big way. The quiet sections lead to a stronger anticipation of the chorus energy.
