Stu Hamm U: Tap Bass

About this course

Tap bass is a relatively new technique favored by many of the world's top contemporary bass players. Tapping is a very expressive tool, which will significantly expand the colors, textures and sonic qualities you'll have at your disposal for any melodic application. Stu covers right-hand, left-hand and best of all -- simultaneous two-hand tapping.

"Here at last is my entire curriculum for learning how to "tap" on the electric bass guitar! We'll start at the very beginning with some basic exercises to get your fingers trained and strengthened up. Once you have a basic understanding of the concepts and become familiar with the essential tapping techniques, we'll put it all to work and start making music! Take your time with this module -- it will pay off big time for you!"

Stu Hamm U: Tap Bass
Greetings once again fellow bassists! Here at last in one place is my entire curriculum for learning how to "tap" on the electric bass guitar! We will start at the very beginning with some basic exercises to get your fingers trained and strengthened up.

Once you have a basic understanding of the concepts and are familiar with the techniques we will be using, we'll then learn to - gasp -use these techniques in a musical manner to enhance your musicality!

Take your time and don't rush, and start working on that pinky NOW!
Stretching Techniques
I just can't stress the importance of developing a warm-up routine of your own enough. By taking the time to warm up and stretch out before you play you can avoid a lot of injuries and have a longer, pain free playing career.

Here are some of the exercises that I use to warm up. Use these as a starting point and come up with your own routine that you use every day before you start playing.
Left Hand Basics
The first thing that you need to learn to do is to get a good tone from your bass while "tapping" down on the strings with you left hand.

Here is your first lesson designed to get your hand used to playing this way and attain the strength that you will need for further tap-sploration.
Right Hand Basics
Left, right left, feels like we are in the Army! Of course, after we get the basics of the left hand down we need to move on to the right hand.

This requires a very pianistic technique and you will need to learn to tap straight down on the strings at a 90% angle to avoid pushing the note sharp and striking only the intended note.
Left Hand: Fifths
Let's start making the left hand a bit more complicated by playing some fifths in the key of G and C. These simple exercises will help you coordinate your left hand and start getting a feel for playing rhythmically.

Once again, remember to really curve your fingers so that you are striking right down on the strings.
Right Hand: Fifths
Let's move on to the right hand and get it playing fifths as well. It's going to be very hard to get a good tone with your pinky, but I suggest that you start working on it right away and not take the easy way out by using another finger. The sooner you start strengthening this dinky digit the better!
Playalong #1
This is the first of our play-along tracks that we will be using to make the exercises fun! You will be gaining strength in your fingers while playing some actual music.

Let the notes ring out as long as possible and concentrate on getting a full tone.

That's how I like it

Stu is a great teacher and he leads this course in a very cautious way so we all benefit from the pace. He made the tap bass really accessible.

Excellent Overview

Stu does a great job of presenting what you need to know in order to integrate the tapping technique into your playing. I can see it having use for solo pieces, I'm less sure it has a place in more run of the mill rhythm playing. That's probably more a reflection of where I am on the learning curve.
