In this series, we will explore 15 solo fingerstyle jazz workouts organized into sets of three, each focusing on a specific style such as standard progressions, turnarounds, bossa nova, or jazz waltz. Each set begins with a foundational workout to establish chord changes and feel, progressively adding complexity with moving basslines, melodies, and syncopation. Whether you're a beginner starting at the first level or an advanced player diving into higher levels, the key to success lies in using a metronome, starting slow, isolating tricky parts for repetition, and setting clear practice goals. Let’s get started with workout one!
In this lesson series, we will work through a four-bar sequence featuring four foundational chord shapes: A minor 7, D7, G major 7, and C major 7. Starting with a bar chord on the 5th fret, we’ll focus on smooth transitions between the bass notes and harmony notes, using the thumb to alternate between the 6th and 5th strings. As we progress, we’ll incorporate movements like shifting from G major 7 to C major 7 on the 5th string, building muscle memory through repetition. Break the sequence into manageable parts, practice steadily, and watch your fluency develop.
