Flying Solo: Beginner Hard Rock
Hey guys, I'm JD McKinney, and welcome to Flying Solo, a beginner's guide to hard rock and heavy metal. So you've got your guitar, you've been playing for a little bit, and you've got the basics down, but you're looking to really branch out and start giving your guitar playing more of a voice. You're looking to start playing some leads in guitar solos.

This course has been specifically designed to get the beginner player into the world of solo guitar. What I'm going to do throughout this course is take a series of four separate licks, teach them to you, and then we'll combine them at the very end to play one complete guitar solo. We're going to do this three times.

I've written three complete guitar solos that we're going to break down and go over, and each of them covers different aspects and techniques of guitar soloing that I'm going to teach you from the beginning to the end of this course. We'll go over things like playing melodies, how to play scale patterns, finger tapping, pinch harmonics, and more.

Stepping into this course, you should have a basic idea of how your guitar works. You should know how to play some basic chords like power chords, and you should have a basic familiarity with major and minor scale patterns, because we're going to be building off of those. By the end of this course, you'll be able to identify a solo arc and understand how a solo is put together, and hopefully, this will propel you into writing your own solos for your original compositions.

I had a lot of fun putting this course together, and I hope that you really enjoy it. So I'm looking forward to seeing you in the first lesson.
Playing a Catchy Melody
In this lesson, we will cover the breakdown of the first section of our very first guitar solo. This relatively easy solo is intended to demonstrate how a guitar solo should flow from beginning to end, telling a story within the song. After briefly presenting the chords that will be played over the rhythm, the lesson focuses on a seven-string guitar and the specific notes used in standard tuning. The instructor teaches the specific fretting pattern in B Fri (a variation of E minor) for the solo, including a slight note change to create tension that seeks resolution. Emphasis is placed on practicing the melody to get used to its feeling and understand how it leads into the next part of the solo, which will be covered in the subsequent lesson.
Creating Musical Resolution
In this lesson, we will cover the breakdown of the second section of our very first guitar solo. Following the introduction of a melody and theme in the previous lesson, this section serves as a musical answer to the unresolved tension, creating a sense of longing for more. The rhythm track remains the same, and the lesson continues to explore the notes in Beef Ridge, with specific instructions on finger placement on various frets of the strings. The lesson emphasizes that this part does not resolve on the root, adding to the feeling of wanting more and leading into the next part of the solo. A practice exercise is provided, along with guidance on thumb placement to give strength and ease in playing. The lesson concludes with an encouragement to practice this section in preparation for the next lesson, which will cover part three of the solo.
Getting Heavy and Altering the Melody
In this lesson, you will learn about the third section of our guitar solo. I welcome learners to this new section, describing a slight change in the rhythm with a heavy distorted tone and the use of power chords. Though the chords are the same, they are played differently, and specific instructions are provided for their execution. We then progress to the breakdown of the third section of the guitar solo, where you will move to E minor, using E as the starting point, and playing higher on the fretboard to create a rising action in the melody. I'll guide you through the new fret positions, maintaining the pattern from the previous section but adjusting it to create a sense of resolve in E minor. While the end of the lick leaves some unresolved tension, the overall melody is more pleasing. I encourage practicing with proper thumb and index finger positioning and promise to continue the instruction in the next section.
A Heavy Resolution
In this lesson, we will cover the final section of the first guitar solo, which continues in E minor and parallels the second half of the B frig in run. We'll display a progression from the initial melody, creating rising tension, and then descending to answer the musical question posed. The melody itself does not resolve but leaves you eager to hear the rest of the song. Our purpose here is to introduce a melody that functions as a song within a song, and to leave you wanting more. I'll break down the rhythm track, which is the same as the last lesson, and guide you through the specific fret positions and notes. After demonstrating the section, I encourage you to practice and prepare for our next lesson, where all four sections will be combined to play the full-length guitar solo.
Solo 1: Narrative of the Gods!
In this lesson, we will cover the final breakdown of our first guitar solo, titled "Narrative of the Gods." We have worked through four sections, and now we're going to combine them to play the entire solo. I'll recap how we started with tension in B Minor, eventually migrating to E Minor for a sense of release but without full resolution. This leaves listeners wanting to continue with the song. Key pointers include proper positioning and posture, maintaining close proximity between the thumb and index finger on opposite sides of the neck for a stronger grip and greater reach. Special techniques for moving between chords and muting strings to reduce noise are also shared. Practice this until you're comfortable, and then we'll move on to breaking down our second guitar solo in the next lesson.
Bluesy Pentatonics
In this lesson, we will begin breaking down the first section of our second guitar solo, which will have a more bluesy feel. Before we delve into the solo, I'll quickly show you the chords we'll be playing over: a series of power chords including E, G, F sharp, A, C, and then back to E. This riff sets a straightforward, hard rock, heavy metal tone. We'll be playing in E minor throughout the solo, specifically using the E minor pentatonic scale, starting on the 12th fret of the low E string. I'll guide you through the fret positions for this scale, and then we'll start our bluesy climb, sticking strictly to our pentatonic "playground." It's a slow, easy climb with a groove to it. I'll walk you through each step, and we'll run it together over the backing track. Keep practicing this pattern, and get used to playing in that pentatonic grouping as it will help us in the next section of the solo, which we'll cover in the next lesson.

Clear, Succinct, and helpful

JD McGibney's Flying Solo: Beginner Hard Rock is the perfect tool to add to a beginner guitarist's arsenal in order to elevate their playing to the next level. The format of the course is easy to understand and gives the viewer simple yet effective tips to get started with deciphering complex topics such as soloing, harmony, tremolo, resolutions, and other musical concepts. His method of instruction is very precise and I had a great time applying these concepts to my own playing. I also like how there's a mixture of technical skills such as tapping and harmonics combined with theoretical components such as resolutions and scales. I highly recommend all beginner guitarists interested in rock to buy JD's course. It's a game changer!
