Bluegrass Rhythm Survival Guide (JamPlay)

About this course

Bluegrass rhythm guitar is the heartbeat of the jam—and if you're planning to join one or want to level up your rhythm chops, this course is your essential starting point. In Bluegrass Rhythm Survival Guide, award-winning flatpicker Tyler Grant gives you a practical, hands-on framework for mastering the role of rhythm guitar in traditional and modern bluegrass settings.

Across 48 clear and progressive lessons, Tyler breaks down everything you need to hold your own in a bluegrass ensemble. You’ll learn how to lock into the classic boom-strum feel, navigate chord progressions with ease, and integrate bass runs, syncopation, and dynamic shifts that add life and movement to your playing. Tyler also shows you how to adapt to different tempos, use a capo effectively, and develop rhythmic intuition that keeps you connected with the mandolins, fiddles, and vocalists around you.

From foundational strumming patterns to more advanced ideas like waltz time, melodic bass movement, and modern bluegrass groove variations, this course will help you stay tight, musical, and in control. You’ll even apply what you've learned in real musical contexts with performance-based lessons featuring classic tunes like “Old Joe Clark,” “Paddy on the Turnpike,” and “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot.”

Whether you’re just stepping into your first jam session or looking to refine your role as the rhythmic engine of the band, this course delivers the skills and confidence to make your playing feel rock solid and stylistically authentic. Bluegrass rhythm guitar isn’t just about keeping time—it’s about driving the music forward. And with Tyler Grant as your guide, you’ll be ready for anything the jam throws your way.

Doubling the Bass Notes

Excellent course with lots of practice rhythms and runs. Fun!

This is a fun course. The practice sessions are excellent and the web controls/software work particulary well here. Lots of hands-on material. There is a good variety of G Runs, D Runs, etc, and many different Rhythyms. I especially appreciated the lesson on how to play less to help maintain the tempo on super fast tunes. Thanks for this excellent course, Tyler.
