About this course

Blending deep musicality with rootsy authenticity, Mary Flower’s Fingerstyle Blues is your gateway to a timeless American tradition. With her signature mix of clarity, groove, and elegance, Mary guides you through 73 lessons covering essential fingerpicking techniques and classic blues repertoire.

You’ll explore Drop D and Open D tunings, eight- and twelve-bar blues forms, ragtime variations, and blues in keys like A, E, and F. Mary breaks down influential songs and styles from legends like Blind Blake, Mississippi John Hurt, and others, helping you internalize the mechanics of melody, bass lines, and syncopated rhythms that define the genre.

From soulful tunes like “Spike Driver Blues” and “Midnight Hour Blues” to rags like “South Carolina Rag” and “Saturday Night Rub,” you’ll develop an ear for nuance and a touch that makes your playing truly sing. Along the way, you'll work on movable chords, diminished voicings, duet arrangements, and dynamic performance approaches that channel the sound of a full band through just six strings and two hands.

This is an inspiring and immersive course for intermediate to advanced players ready to deepen their understanding of blues, broaden their repertoire, and refine their fingerstyle technique with one of the genre’s most respected educators.

What you'll learn

  • Execute movable slant and straight chord shapes up the neck
  • Play natural harmonics at 5th, 7th, and 12th frets
  • Create reverse slant chord voicings in higher register
  • Improvise melodic lines using movable chord shapes

This course presents a different, more personal style highlighting the Blues. And thankfully, Mary sings on a number of the tracks. An added value, as for me, she has one of the most beautiful voices in blues and folk music.

Follow what she says

I play classical guitar , you must be willing to use your acoustic guitar to sound like her . Nylon strings not recommended because of major alternate tunings .
