Deep Grooves: Modern Blues

About this course

Robben Ford’s Modern Blues Edition of Deep Grooves, is focused on slower tempo, modern blues grooves that are frequently encountered on the gig, or in a blues jam situation.

Robben will show you how he would craft solos and rhythm parts, over each of the 5 modern blues grooves.

”For this Modern Blues edition, we dug a little deeper to select slower grooves that we felt had a broader emotional spectrum.

Each soloing performance is an improvisation presented in an arc, beginning with the pentatonic scale, moving into the major scale that runs through the chord, into arpeggios, and then we combine them all.

I’ll also show you chord voicings and the approach I would use for comping over these grooves and supporting the soloist.

Everything is tabbed and synced to the video. Plus, you’ll be able to use TrueFire’s learning tools to loop, slow down any video so you can practice and play along with me at your own pace.”

Robben explains and demonstrates all of the key concepts and approaches along the way. You’ll get standard notation and tabs for all of the soloing and rhythm performance studies. Plus, you’ll be able to use TrueFire’s learning tools to sync the tab and notation to the video lesson.

You can also loop or slow down the videos so that you can work with the lessons at your own pace. All of the backing tracks are also included to work with on your own.

Grab your guitar, and let's get in a “modern blues groove” with Robben Ford!

Deep Grooves: Modern Blues
Hey, Robben Ford here for this modern blues edition of Deep Grooves. This time around we've dug a little deeper to select slower grooves that we felt had a broader emotional spectrum.

Each soloing performance is an improvisation presented in an arc, beginning with the pentatonic scale, moving into the major scale that runs through the cord into arpeggios, and then we combine them all together, let it rip.

I'll also show you chord voicings and the approach I would use to copy over these grooves and supporting the soloists, which is very important.

Everything is tabbed and synced to the video and you can slow down or loop any of the video lessons to learn at your own pace. Grab a guitar, let's get started!
Track 1: Dragon's Tail Solo Section
In this lesson we're going to be listening to a chord vamp. This is from a song on my album Pure titled Dragon's Tale. The portion we'll be focusing on comes from the solo section. We'll take a listen, get a feeling for what we're gonna working with, and then, I'll tell you a little more about it. We'll kick things off with a performance of the lead, next we'll get into the rhythm. After each performance I will break everything down for you in detail.

Beyond “Four on the Floor”

This is my latest addition of Robben Ford courses provided by TF. It is about blues based modern grooves accompanied by tasteful and melodic solos. The beauty lies in the details of his explanations how he approaches comping and soloing track by track. Comping: As it is about modern grooves, do not expect “four on the floor” comping. Instead, the comping for the 5 tracks on offer is syncopated and mostly rather funky or triplet oriented. I like the space that Robben Ford allows to deliver inspiring grooves for the soloist. Hereby, chords are reduced to the max to avoid distraction. E. g. avoid redundant notes in the comping chord which you may usually find in campfire chords. Apart from the usual breakdown of the comping sections Robben Ford provides tons of practical extra information and (mostly not notated) variations you may insert while playing which are very useful inputs. Further take-aways are (i) if the groove is “in the pocket” you do not need overly complex chords, (ii) if the soloist pauses you may use that space for comping variations that may inspire the soloist for his/her next turn, and, of course, (iii) listen to the other musicians. Soloing: Regarding the improvised solos, Robben Ford intends to start with the pentatonic scales then moves to the major scales before he opens up and “rips”. As the solos are improvised, he admits that he may occasionally deviate from the pure execution of the outlined plan. :)) In summary, this is a great course for anybody who wants to improve on blues-oriented modern comping and tasteful soloing.
