Blues Hooks, Riffs & Rhythms Vol. 2

About this course

In the first volume of Blues Hooks, Riffs & Rhythms from Robben Ford he revealed 20 of his own go-to melodic devices for developing solos, riff idea starters, rhythmic motifs and “hooks” that he artfully uses as creative approaches for his own music and performances.

Here in this second volume, Robben goes deeper and wider with 20 more Blues Hooks, Riffs and Rhythms: New Orleans Double Stop Hook, Answer To The Bass, High End Aggression, Straight Up Rhythm Riff, A Single Line Through It, Long Winded, Open E Blues Lick, Strong Rhythm, Different Voicing, Nothing Better Than A 7th, Transplanted Hook, A Little Latin Flavor, 6th Hook Device, 5th Mood, Minor 6th Special, Quick Blues Riffs, Forego The Four, Ambiguous Hammer, Single Note Rhythm, Tuck It Down Low and Rolling Sus Device.

”Whenever I’m creating a rhythm part, improvising a solo or even composing a new song -- I tend to take a small melodic or rhythmic idea, “a hook”, and treat it like a theme or motif to expand on.

In this first volume, I’ve created 20 unique hooks, riffs and rhythms across 5 different grooves. Here’s 20 more of my favorites. I’ll first perform each hook over a track -- showing you how I expand on my own ideas with variations on the theme -- and then I’ll break down everything in detail, pointing out the creative concepts behind my musical decisions.

Consider this collection of my own hooks, riffs and rhythms as a toolbox of musical ideas that you can use to inspire your own solos and rhythm parts -- or even the foundation for writing your own original compositions.”

Robben will explain and demonstrate all of the key concepts and approaches along the way. You’ll get standard notation and tabs for all of the performance studies. Plus, you’ll be able to use TrueFire’s learning tools to sync the tab and notation to the video lesson.

You can also loop or slow down the videos so that you can work with the lessons at your own pace. All of the backing tracks are also included to work with on your own.

Grab your guitar, and let’s dig in with Robben Ford!

Blues Hooks, Riffs & Rhythms Vol. 2
Hey, I'm Robben Ford. Welcome to Blues Hooks, Riffs, & Rhythms Vol. 2.

Whenever I'm creating a rhythm part, improvising a solo or even composing a new song - I tend to take a small melodic or rhythmic idea, "a hook", and treat it like a theme or motif to expand on.

In this second volume, I've created 20 more unique hooks, riffs and rhythms across 5 different grooves. You'll also have all of TrueFire's learning tools to work with along the way.

Consider this collection of my own hooks, riffs and rhythms as a toolbox of musical ideas that you can use to inspire your own solos and rhythm parts - or even the foundation for writing your own original compositions.

New Orleans Double Stop Hook
In this video, I put a lot of emphasis on the double stop. We'll start out with the main hook, and find ways to fill out some space with some other cool ideas. We'll also leave some open space to give the rest of the band some room to shine. As always, feel free to adjust any of these ideas to your liking.

Answer To The Bass
Here's a 2-chord vamp which alternates between a G7 and C9. Again, we'll start out with the main hook and continue to expand our ideas from there.

High End Aggression
For this performance we're essentially playing a simple triad in various positions, however, we're doing it with a 1/2 step bend, which gives us some extra grit and aggression.
