Blues Hooks, Riffs & Rhythms Vol. 1

About this course

All of our guitar heroes have their own personal creative approaches for improvising solos, crafting rhythm parts on the fly and composing new songs. This first volume of Blues Hooks, Riffs & Rhythms from Robben Ford reveals 20 of Robben’s own go-to melodic devices for developing solos, riff idea starters, rhythmic motifs and “hooks” that he artfully uses as creative approaches for his own music and performances.

”Whenever I’m creating a rhythm part, improvising a solo or even composing a new song -- I tend to take a small melodic or rhythmic idea, “a hook”, and treat it like a theme or motif to expand on.

In this first volume, I’ve created 20 unique hooks, riffs and rhythms across 5 different grooves. I’ll first perform each hook over a track -- showing you how I expand on my own ideas with variations on the theme -- and then I’ll break down everything in detail, pointing out the creative concepts behind my musical decisions.

Consider this collection of my own hooks, riffs and rhythms as a toolbox of musical ideas that you can use to inspire your own solos and rhythm parts -- or even the foundation for writing your own original compositions.”

Robben will pass on a variety of soloing and rhythmic approaches including: Funky G7, Rockin' Blue 5ths, Traditional Blues Dubs, Low-End Answer, Single String Riffin’, Rhythm Contrast, Double Stop Theme, Riff in 4ths, Playin' With Dorian, Open String Lines, Three Note Hook, Magic Sam's Motif, Slow Bendy Line, Staccato Movin’, Chicago Chording, Dirty Onion Riff, Buddy's Vibe, Up & Down Double Stops, and The Big Setup.

Robben will explain and demonstrate all of the key concepts and approaches along the way. You’ll get standard notation and tabs for all of the performance studies. Plus, you’ll be able to use TrueFire’s learning tools to sync the tab and notation to the video lesson.

You can also loop or slow down the videos so that you can work with the lessons at your own pace. All of the backing tracks are also included to work with on your own.

Grab your guitar, and let’s dig in with Robben Ford!

Hey, I'm Robben Ford. Welcome to Blues Hooks, Riffs, & Rhythms.

Funky G7
Here we're looking at a funky track, focusing on how we can use the G7 chord to create a rhythmic motif. I often say this is my favorite chord, giving us a different feel then it would if we had a major or minor 3rd added in. As we move through the progression, we're trying to keep the tension of the 7 chord, creating a nice tight rhythm part that stays out of the way of everyone else. Let's check it out.

Rockin' Blue 5ths
This is a bluesy little lick that we can create a great motif out of, using overdrive to give it a bit more of a rock feel. There's a cool turnaround that the bassist is doing on the IV chord that we can play in and add onto, making it a unique part for the guitar. Grabbing onto these things is something the guitar does best - "floating" across the band and using their parts to create a hook.

Traditional Blues Dubs
Let's check out another bluesy funk riff over the track, looking at new ways we can break things up and add to the hook. It's important to play things differently as you're working through the motif, so that the listener doesn't get bored. Let's check out how to change up the basic idea and play it in a new way each time.

Blues Hooks, Riffs & Rhythms Vol 1

Of all the Truefire courses and teachers, I find Robin Ford is probably the best. He provides breadth and depth in the overviews, the performances and the breakdown. Not just a guitarist - a real musician.

Great but know your inversions

Robben Ford is a Master of chord inversions so before you take this course be sure to spend a bit of time getting to understand inversions as they are used extensively. Other than that its a fantastic course and he is an amazing teacher. I love his spiritual approach...
