Raw Chicago Blues

About this course

Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, Elmore James, Jimmy Reed, Little Walter, amongst many other blues legends, migrated from the country to light up Chicago with an electrified style of Delta Blues giving birth to what we call Chicago Blues today.

Bob Margolin’s Raw Chicago Blues takes you back to the birthplace of Chicago Blues to inform whatever style of blues you play today. You can use Raw Chicago Blues to re-create it, carry it forward or add its special hot sauce to your own voice and music.

‘Steady Rollin’ Bob Margolin played guitar in Muddy Waters’ band from 1973 through 1980. He appeared on all of the albums Muddy made then and at special shows like The Last Waltz.

Bandleader, recording artist and featured guest ever since, Bob has won multiple blues awards over the years. A bonafide legend of the blues, Bob Margolin’s pedigree is a mile long. We’re thrilled to welcome Bob to the family with his first TrueFire course, Raw Chicago Blues!

”Muddy called his music Old School. I call it Raw Chicago Blues. It’s powerful and passionate, not slick. Electric guitars through cranked amps kick ass and break hearts.

In this course, I’ll share what I learned from Muddy and from playing thousands of gigs — in short, how to deliver your very best for the musicians you play with, for your audience, and for yourself.”

Bob will share his experiences with you and present what he considers to be the 12 most important best practices, creative approaches and techniques for performing with a band, writing your own blues songs, gigging or simply jamming at the local club.

You’ll learn best practices for leading a band with cues, Chicago-style double stops, songwriting from your own and others experiences, planning your live sets, staying original while paying homage to your heroes, and many other approaches that you’ll be able to put to work immediately to inform your own playing and enhance your musicianship. Bob will also guide you through 10 Raw Chicago Blues performance studies to help give you an authentic feel for the style.

Bob will explain and demonstrate all of the key concepts and approaches along the way. You’ll get standard notation and tabs for all of the performance studies. Plus, you’ll be able to use TrueFire’s learning tools to sync the tab and notation to the video lesson. You can also loop or slow down the videos so that you can work with the lessons at your own pace.

Grab your guitar, and let’s get “raw” with Bob Margolin!

Chicago Blues Masterclass

What a fantastic course, it's an absolute pleasure listening to BM talking about this time with Muddy Waters. You don't hear anybody very often given instructions and providing commentary whilst they are playing, BM does it with such ease. Who needs a band if you can sound like this on your own!! Check it out, a truly great course if you are into blues music...

Awesome!

This is a fantastic course. Not only is Bob the ideal person to teach a course on Chicago blues given his deep history with Muddy but he's also a great teacher. And the way he structures the individual lessons is very different from most Truefire courses, which makes it super engaging. A volume 2 of this course would be awesome!!

Raw And Real

I met Bob Margolin at a tribute to the late bluesman, Michael Burks. Bob "the teacher" is just like Bob "the person". Real, kind and willing to share the knowledge and memories he has. If you just pick up a smidgen of what he lays down in this course, you will come away a far better musician. Just the bits on stage etiquette are worth the price of admission.

The real thing

Oh man this is great. He was Muddy buddy for years and now with a lot of baggage at 72 age spread he this legacy over us. Great teacher to listen, shows a lot of techniques, improvises and very useful concepts. Takes time to master this.
