About this course

Robert Fripp, Ed Sheeran, KT Tunstall, David Torn, Tim Reynolds, Ed O’Brien, and Kurt Vile are just a few of the countless guitarists and singer-songwriters that have helped make the art of live looping so popular today.

Whether you play just for yourself or perform live in front of audiences, learning how to create with a simple looper pedal is a game changer for any musician. This is especially true for guitarists who are able to create entire multi-part arrangements with percussive, rhythmic and melodic layers. Carl Wockner’s Artistic Looping for Guitar Players is your own personal game changer!

"I’ve organized this course into six sections. We’ll start with types of looper pedals and setup tips, and then I’ll help you create your first “seamless” loop, building percussion tracks with your guitar and voice.

From there, we’ll tackle layering and overdubbing approaches, multitrack loopers, timing, live performance, and a ton more.

In the final section I’ll perform six of my own songs on my personal live looping rig and then deconstruct the approach I use in my own live performances.”

Throughout the course, Carl will guide you through a series of six challenges to help get your looping skills up to speed and you’ll have TrueFire’s learning tools to work with as well.

Carl Wockner was named the first and only Australian artist to ever win Top Honors at the International Acoustic Music Award’s 2015, along with top of the AAA category for the release of his album Crayon Days. His “rare live looping style solo performances, signature vocals and unique acoustic guitar work renders Carl in a league of his own.”

We’re thrilled to welcome Carl to the family with his first TrueFire course, Artistic Looping for Guitar Players. Grab your guitar and looping pedal and play your way through his engaging curriculum — you will likewise be thrilled with the music you make that comes out the other side.

”Looping allows me to experiment in real time with my audience while absorbing the energy of the room. I get to explore different sounds and capture them live on stage in a unique way. For me, this isn’t just music making - it's moment making. ”

Grab your gear and let’s loop with Carl Wockner!

Artistic Looping for Guitar Players
Hi, I'm Carl Wockner. Welcome to Artist Looping for Guitar Players! This series is designed to extend your experience and fluidity of using a loop pedal. No matter the level of your ability, you will be challenged and will certainly find components to adapt to your live performance.

Ed Sheeran, Jarle Bernhoft, KT Turnstall, Tim Reynolds, and Tash Sultana are just a few of the countless guitarists and singer-songwriters that have helped make the art of live looping so popular today.

Whether you play for yourself or perform live on stage, learning how to create with a simple looper pedal is a game changer for any musician. Especially for us guitarists - we can create entire multi-part arrangements with percussive, rhythmic and melodic layers.

Looping allows me to experiment in real time with my audience while absorbing the energy of the room. I get to explore different sounds and capture them on stage in a cool way.

To me, this isn’t just music making - its moment making. Grab your guitar - let’s loop!
Primer & Looping Foundations
Before we dive in and set our first loop, let's look at a few pedals to see which one is right for you, and go through the features live loopers have and make sure you've got all the setting correct before we begin.
Types of Loop Pedals
A brief description of the most commonly used loop pedals. There are many brands available on the market, though all of which operate in a similar way. For the majority of this course, I'll be using the most common pedal - Boss RC30. Any other loop pedal will be fine for use through this course.
Setting Basic Levels
Prior to using your pedal for performance, it is very important to know the correct setup of your signal chain and levels. This video will help you to set this correctly.
A Couple Things to Note
Some basic functions such as Delete, Record, Overdub, Stop. This is a basic overview of the features of this particular loop station, the Boss RC30.
The First Seamless Loop
So in this next section, we're going to dive in and create your first loop. I'm going to talk about the percussion elements you can use on your guitar as well as chords, trying to create a seamless loop. Let's get working!
Recording Your First Guitar Layer
The first and most important layer is the foundation of even the largest looping setups. Here we work on timing and coordination with your foot to record, play and stop.

Carl Wockner absolutely nailed it with this loop pedal course!

He somehow manages to be incredibly thorough without ever making it feel heavy — every lesson stays fun, engaging, and packed with practical tips. It honestly feels like the definitive loop pedal tutorial. As a huge bonus, Carl even included six of his own songs at the end, which not only show off what’s possible but really inspire you to dive in creatively. If you're looking to master looping while actually having a good time doing it, this is the course to grab. Hats off, Carl!

Disappointing Video That Left Me Frustrated

I don't want to be negative because I think Carl is a good musician and singer, but I find it very frustrating that he completely ignores the entire subject of CHANGES in a song and how to use a looper to create them correctly. I'm talking about Verses, Bridges, Chorus, Verse etc. ---- basic Beginning, Middle, End ----- that follow traditional song forms of 95% of popular music in all genres. His demonstrations of his "Songs" are actually just examples of what are correctly called "Vamps". These are short repeating chord forms with different rhythms. They don't resolve until you decide to stop them. They are great for practicing and for improvising, and working out licks and sounds etc, but these are mostly NOT songs to my ear and can soon become boring. Yes there are many examples of famous classic tunes which only use a couple of chords (Bo Diddley, "All Blues" by Miles Davis, etc), but these are in the minority. In the majority from the Beatles to the great jazz standards we have song forms like A-A-B-A or A-B-A-B etc. In the bluest country, and rock and roll have 12 bar forms etc. But in all of these, we have forms that begin, make changes, and resolve. For someone like me who wants to learn how to use a looper to make these "Traditional Song Forms With Changes" there is very little information or serious examples to be found anywhere. I find it very frustrating that the vast majority of people who are into looping do not seem to be into this. WHY? They are content with Vamps only. It's very difficult to find examples of people actually using Boss or other loopers to achieve more sophisticated forms, and what options these different loopers have to allow for this. I'm on a learning curve and hope that I will be able to solve this question.
