Practice Sessions: Hybrid Picking

About this course

Hybrid picking is the right-hand picking technique that allows guitar players to take ready advantage of using both pick and fingers at the same time for greater articulation, dynamics, and tonal control in both your lead and rhythm playing.

You’ll play your way through this Hybrid Picking edition of Practice Sessions from James Hogan, which will build your hybrid picking technique across eight powerful interactive practice sessions, each focusing on a different hybrid picking application.

”We’ll work on hybrid picked piano style comping, arpeggiated melodies, syncopated phrasing, double stops, chicken pickin’ and other key approaches.

Each session begins with a quick breakdown of the technique and then I’ll perform a demonstration of that particular technique over a groove. We’ll work with a variety of styles for musical context.

We’ll cap off each rhythm study together with a hands-on practice session. I’ll roll the track and we’ll trade back and forth as I guide you through the core examples followed by several variations and embellishments.”

What makes this format really special is how you’ll get these approaches firmly under your fingers -- you’ll practice each of the concepts together with James, in a series of interactive practice sessions. Working regularly with these “practice sessions” is the key to developing a solid command of all 8 hybrid picking techniques.

You’ll get standard notation and tabs for all of the performance studies. Plus, you’ll be able to use TrueFire’s learning tools to sync the tab and notation to the video lesson. You can also loop or slow down the videos so that you can work with the lessons at your own pace. All of the backing tracks are included to work with on your own as well.

Grab your guitar and let’s dig in with James Hogan!

Practice Sessions: Hybrid Picking
Hi, I'm James Hogan! Welcome to Practice Sessions: Hybrid Picking. Quite simply, hybrid picking is a picking technique that gives players the advantage of using a pick and fingers at the same time. This practical approach is great for pick-styled players who'd like to add some fingerstyle techniques to their playing, and it's a fantastic way for fingerstyle players to add some picking chops to their style. Motown, Neo-Soul, Blues, Jazz, Rock and Country are some of the many styles that feature this guitar technique.

In this course we'll cover 8 killer practice examples in a variety of styles and feels that will help us hone our hybrid picking chops while adding some new licks & tricks to our bag. I absolutely love this technique! Whether you're an intermediate player in need of some new ideas or a seasoned pro just looking for a refresher, I think you'll get a lot out of the material I'll be presenting here in this Practice Sessions: Hybrid Picking course. All of the examples are laid out for you in both tablature and standard notation, and I've included some really nice backing tracks for you to jam along with at home! Keep in mind, these examples cover a variety of styles and hybrid picking techniques, with varying levels of difficulty. Let's get to it!
Soul Rhythm Hybrid Picking
For this example we'll arpeggiate a C Maj barre chord using hybrid picking. The pick will play a downstroke on the A string and fingers M, A and C will arpeggiate the rest of the chord on the D, G and B strings respectively. I've added a nice little 16th note triplet via hammer-on and pull-off at the top of the pattern that features Csus4 resolving to C Maj. This will allow us to flip the pattern and descend down the arpeggio in style. From there we'll hop up a couple of frets to a Dmin7 barre chord for a piano styled comp before we add in a harp styled arpeggio in the style of Marv Tarplin from Smokey Robinson & The Miracles. You'll hear players use this style of arpeggiating with both hybrid picking and straight picking in modern R&B & Soul playing. Check out Jubu Smith, Spanky Alford, Wah Wah Watson and others using these moves back in the 90's on neo-soul records from Tony! Toni Toné!, Raphael Saadiq, Total, D'Angelo, Maxwell, etc..

Soul Lead Hybrid Picking
In this example we'll play a nice single note sequence in 4ths through the C Maj pentatonic scale. Since this sequence uses 4th intervals, we'll be dealing with two adjacent strings at a time. Use your middle finger (M) or ring finger (A) to pluck the higher of the two adjacent strings, and use your pick (downstroke) on the lower of the two strings. For example, if you are playing notes on the high E and B strings use your middle finger (M) or ring finger (A) to pluck the E string and your pick on the B string. If you are playing on the B and G strings use your middle finger (M) or ring finger (A) on the B string and pick on the G string. Make sense?

Also, pay attention to the hammer-ons in this example. Try to make the hammer-ons as loud as the plucked notes. This can be tricky while keeping everything in time. The last little part of this example is a Curtis Mayfield/Hendrix styled slide. Again, the pick is on the lower of the two strings and either finger (M or A) will pluck the higher string. Your preference.

Regarding the backing track, we'll be playing over a two bar phrase (Cmaj to Dmin7). Check out Marv Tarplin on "Cruisin'" from Smokey Robinson for some rhythm inspiration in this style. This lead example is inspired by a keyboard line from "Living For The Love Of You" by the Isley Brothers, although Neal Schon does a similar thing on the song "Lights" by Journey.

The concepts are explained clearly and the play along is very good. Now, this is an entry level course for a beginner guitar player. Other than that, very enjoyable course.

Nice introduction to hybrid picking

This course is a good introduction to the hybrid picking technique with applications to different styles. I liked the fact that the technique was developed both in rhythm and lead playing. It helped me get the basics down and I can already see how to incorporate the technique into my playing. I would recommend this course to anyone new to hybrid picking!
