About this course

This edition of the Jam Blues Camp featuring David Hamburger, Tim Lerch, and Frank Vignola focuses on a variety of techniques and creative approaches for applying jazz harmony when improvising.

Expanding on core concepts from their TrueFire library, the educators present new variations, more advanced techniques, and additional harmonic applications to enhance your rhythm playing over common blues changes.

Tim Lerch presents concepts for comping and soloing using single line blues melodies, double stop harmony, and a study that focuses on triads and 7th chords.

David Hamburger's series will focus on ways to connect lines with changes from the I to the IV chord, the IV to the I chord, and finally for lines with ii-V-I progressions.

Frank Vignola wraps up the camp course with three variations for improvising over a bluesy ii-V progression using minor9 arpeggios, chromatic connections, and I-ii-bii-V arpeggios.

The course includes all of the studio, on-location, and live-streamed video lessons, backing tracks, Q&A sessions, and prep materials presented before and during the live Jazz Blues Camp.

Tim, David and Frank will explain and demonstrate all of the key concepts and approaches along the way. You’ll get standard notation and tabs for all of the performance studies. Plus, you’ll be able to use TrueFire’s learning tools to sync the tab and notation to the video lesson. You can also loop or slow down the videos so that you can work with the lessons at your own pace. All of the backing tracks are included to work with on your own as well.

Grab your guitar, and let’s jazz it up with David Hamburger, Tim Lerch, and Frank Vignola!

Introducing David Hamburger
Welcome everyone to TrueFire Jazz Blues Camp. First up, we've got a long time TrueFire educator. Please welcome David Hamburger, a great fingerstyle and electric guitar player, with a hip jazz blues approach.
Level 2: Jazz Blues Soloing
We'll start things out with a quick review of the upcoming lesson, taken from his course Take 5: Jazz Blues Soloing. This is Level 2 of the course, where we're putting in some hip, jazz sounds over a set of swing blues changes.
Level 2: Jazz Blues Soloing
For my money, swing guitar kind of starts and ends with Charlie Christian. I can't count how many times I've recommended The Genius of the Electric Guitar to someone interested in learning to play the changes on the blues. It's got most of the classic songs and solos Christian recorded as part of the Benny Goodman Sextet, and it's a textbook on how to simultaneously sound smooth, funky and surprising over dominant seventh chords.
Level 2: Jazz Blues Soloing
Like T-Bone Walker, Charlie Christian was a huge influence on both his contemporaries and subsequent generations of guitarists. Two of his most immediate and successful influence-ees, if that's a word, were Oscar Moore and Mary Osborne. Moore played in the very popular and influential Nat Cole Trio, while Osborne worked with many of the great jazz musicians throughout her career. Both made solo records which are worth seeking out along with Moore's Nat Cole recordings.
Level 2: Jazz Blues Soloing
The thing I love about Charlie Christian is the way you can practically see the guitar shapes go by when you hear him play. And if you want to hear what his ideas sound like in a more contemporary context, hunt up some Hollywood Fats or Rick Holmstrom on Youtube. As much as T-Bone Walker is considered the fountainhead of jump blues, nearly every modern practitioner of the style has seems to have as much Charlie Christian in their playing as anything else, and rightly so.
From I to IV
For his first variation on the lesson, David takes us through how to get from the I chord to the IV.
