50 Right-Hand Techniques
Welcome to 50 Right and Techniques You MUST Know!

These different techniques will give you the tools to get so many more sounds out of your guitar, as well as to play with more ease and better tone. From easy and basic concepts that you may have overlooked, to specific techniques from different styles of guitar music, to a few that I've come up with on my own in my search for a certain sound or feel.

You can skip around, doing just the easy arpeggios and fingerpicking patterns, or the more unusual ones.

Enjoy the exploration and don't be afraid to try every one!
Right Hand Position
To get a natural, relaxed stroke your right hand position is determined by where the fingers hang loosely over the strings they are about to play, as perpendicular to the strings (in all directions) as possible.

You will find the wrist is up a little, and this determines where the arm falls against the guitar.
Tone & Motion of Right Hand
Be sure the edges of your fingernail are sanded very smooth to get the best sound. Refer to #4 for shaping and sanding the nails. Be patient with your hand if it's doing something it's never done before. Listen to the tone, watch the motion of the finger and wait until it falls back to place completely relaxed before playing the next note.

Very, very slow practice pays off here. It allows you to play fast much more easily once the fingers get used to relaxing between strokes.
Motion of the Thumb
Moving the whole arm adds power and drive to the thumb. Most of the time you will be doing a free stroke in which the thumb swings in front of the fingers. You can also do a rest stroke with the thumb, pushing the thumb down with the arm so that it ends up resting on the next string.

This thumb rest stroke brings out the bass notes in the same way that a rest stroke with the fingers brings out the melody notes.
Shaping Fingernails & Picks
If you are just trying to get used to playing with fingernails you can use press-on nails or ping pong balls cut to the shape of your nail. A little glue dot (the rubbery kind) augmented with a small piece of surgical tape or bandage at the base of the plastic nail holds on for about a day or until you peel it off. Cut the artificial nails fairly short and sand the same way you would sand your regular nails. Or go to a nail salon and have some tips put on. Explain it's for guitar playing, strong but not too long!
Free Stroke
The free stroke is simply the usual motion of the fingers. This ties in with the right hand position and motion of the right hand fingers to get the most efficient technique and best sound.
Rest Stroke
The rest stroke is used extensively in flamenco music and also to bring the melody out on classical guitar. Because the rest stroke gives more power, if you are using a steel string guitar with low action you may have to lighten up the stroke so that that strings don't buzz against the frets.

The example I play is the beginning of my composition "Arioso" which is available in its entirety on the sheet music page of my website, and it is also taught in detail in my TrueFire DVD "Innovations."

Very good fingerstyle course

I've bought a few of Muriel's courses and she presents the techniques in a very enthusiastic way - not easy though! Requires lots of practice to get fingers to work more efficiently.
