30 Fearless Chordal Licks You MUST Know

About this course

In Carl Verheyen’s 30 Fearless Single-Note Licks collection, Carl shared a versatile multi-style collection of single-note licks. In this companion edition, Carl expands your ‘fearless’ vocabulary with 30 Fearless Chordal Licks You MUST Know for blues, jazz, country, bluegrass, rock, and R&B.

”I’ve been a professional guitar player all of my life. From club work and wedding receptions in my teens, studio work and arena-touring rock n roll in my late 20s, to present day as a solo artist, studio musician, composer, producer, educator, and bandleader touring the world.

But it's my career as a studio musician that made me truly fearless. I learned early on to say YES to every call. Can you play country music? Yes. Can you play Jazz? Yes. Blues? Yes. Metal? Bluegrass? R&B? Can you play in the style of Chet Atkins? Clapton? Hendrix? Jeff Beck? Yes, yes, and yes!. These 30 Chordal licks will help you build the vocabulary you’ll need to also say…YES!”

Carl will perform each chordal lick over a backing track and then break down the lick down emphasizing the ornamentation and techniques required to perform it.

Carl will explain and demonstrate all of the key concepts and approaches along the way. You’ll get standard notation and tabs for each of the performances. Plus, you’ll be able to use TrueFire’s learning tool to sync the tab and notation to the video.

Carl includes all of the backing tracks for you to work with on your own. In addition, you’ll be able to loop or slow down any of the videos so that you can work with the lessons at your own pace.

Grab your guitar and let’s get fearless with Carl Verheyen!

30 Fearless Chordal Licks
Hi, I'm Carl Verheyen. Welcome to 30 Fearless Chordal licks You MUST Know!

In this edition of Fearless Licks, I'll show you 30 versatile chordal licks that I use for blues, jazz, country, bluegrass, rock, and R&B.

I've been a professional guitar player all of my life.

Clapton? Hendrix? Jeff Beck? Yes, yes, and yes!

At some point, it dawned on me that each musical style is related and there are “only 12 little notes.” It all comes down to the ornamentation of the style.

These 30 fearless licks help me make my music sound different, and I'm sure they'll help you do the same.

I'll perform the lick for you over a backing track, give you some background, break the lick down for you, and then show you how you can use the lick yourself as a springboard for your own musical ideas.

Everything is tabbed and notated. Plus, you'll get all of the backing tracks to work with on your own. You can loop and slow down the videos so you can work with the lessons at your own pace.

Ready to get started? Grab your guitar - be fearless!
Jet Plane Lick
We'll start out with a short little hammer on lick that becomes very useful for rhythm parts or soloing. Learn it in all 12 dominant keys!
Ascending Jet Plane
This longer line expands the "Jet Plane" hammer-on lick to a full, across the neck rhythm part but I use it for soloing in many different keys. I'm only limited by the horizontal nature of this line....I run out of frets above the key of G.
Swamp Slide
Some of the chord forms I learned in my jazz studies translate easily into the funk world. The 13#9 dominant chord is a perfect example of that Jazz to funk duality. At slower tempos, this lick feels real swampy.
Blue Monk Walk Up
Chromatic freedom with chords is a logical extension of chromaticism in your soloing. Why not use the cromatic concept with multiple notes? There are many other ways to use this simple concept, especially in funky single chord progressions.
Pivot Hammer
Inner chord motion is great in any style. This A7 chord sounds great for country music or bluegrass. I use hybrid picking to make a "chicken pickin" groove out of the lick.
Reed-Riffs
Jerry Reed had more funky stuff going on in his playing than anybody in country music. This is more of a distillation of his classic take on "Alabama Jubilee", so you can get the idea. But of you listen to the original, you'll hear him do many variations making it one of the craziest Telecaster parts on record.

A Chapter in the Book of Carl V

Carl has spoke to how he has made a career of his playing as a studio musician. This course is an excellent calling card to just that. Carl covers a variety of playing styles in this course. He offers a mastery level of musicianship for each playing style. He then incorporates his own tricks and tips into each of the sections covered in this course. I would recommend his courses to anyone looking to better his/her/their playing I.Q.
