30 Fearless Single-Note Licks You MUST Know

About this course

In this collection of 30 Fearless Single-Note Licks You MUST Know, Carl Verheyen presents a versatile multi-style collection of single-note licks that you can use for Blues, Jazz, Country, Bluegrass, Rock, and R&B.

”I’ve been a professional guitar player all of my life. From club work and wedding receptions in my teens, studio work and arena-touring rock n roll in my late 20s, to present day as a solo artist, studio musician, composer, producer, educator, and bandleader touring the world.

But it's my career as a studio musician that made me truly fearless. I learned early on to say YES to every call. Can you play country music? Yes. Can you play Jazz? Yes. Blues? Yes. Metal? Bluegrass? R&B? Can you play in the style of Chet Atkins? Clapton? Hendrix? Jeff Beck? Yes, yes, and yes!

At some point, it dawned on me that each musical style is related and there are “only 12 little notes.” It all comes down to the ornamentation of the style and that’s what I will be emphasizing in this course — not just the vocabulary of licks, but also how to ‘ornament’ a phrase to fit any style you happen to be soloing over.”

Carl will perform each lick over a backing track and then break down the lick down emphasizing the ornamentation and techniques required to perform it.

He will explain and demonstrate all of the key concepts and approaches along the way. You’ll get standard notation and tabs for each of the performances. Plus, you’ll be able to use TrueFire’s learning tool to sync the tab and notation to the video.

Carl includes all of the backing tracks for you to work with on your own. In addition, you’ll be able to loop or slow down any of the videos so that you can work with the lessons at your own pace.

Grab your guitar and let’s get fearless with Carl Verheyen!

30 Fearless Single-Note Licks
Hi, I'm Carl Verheyen. Welcome to 30 Fearless Single-Note Licks You MUST Know!

In this edition of Fearless Licks, I'll show you 30 versatile single-note licks that I use for blues, jazz, country, bluegrass, rock, and R&B.

I've been a professional guitar player all of my life. From club work and wedding receptions in my teens, studio work and arena-touring rock 'n' roll in my late 20s, to present day as a solo artist, studio musician, composer, producer, educator, and bandleader touring the world.

At some point, it dawned on me that each musical style is related and there are "only 12 little notes." It all comes down to the ornamentation of the style.

These 30 Fearless Licks help me make my music sound different, and I'm sure they'll help you do the same.

I'll perform the lick for you over a backing track, give you some background, break the lick down for you, and then show you how you can use the lick yourself as a springboard for your own musical ideas.

Everything is tabbed and notated. Plus, you'll get all of the backing tracks to work with on your own. You can loop and slow down the videos so you can work with the lessons at your own pace.

Beyond My Reach
What originally started as a 3 note string skipping exercise quickly became a lick I use all the time. I'm not a big believer in "exercises" when I'm practicing, so the fact that this is musical and useful is very important to me. I use it at the end of my song called "Beyond My Reach" on the Grand Design album.
Thumb Start Dominant
Because we electric guitarists hook our left hand thumb over the neck as a pressure point to bend against, I take advantage of it for playing notes on my low E string.
Thumb Start Minor
Another line using the thumb to create a big interval between the root and the minor 7th of the key.
Taylor's Blues Melody
A tritone lick that has a "jump blues" quality to it while also sounding very modern.
Sliding Up
A dominant 7 lick that can be played in any key and moves up the fingerboard by sliding with the first, second and third fingers.
Revival Downs Line
When I wrote the song "Revival Downs", this was actually the first part I came up with...the solo! Here it is played over a blues progression with a swing feel.

This is a lesson of broad scope. All styles of music are concerned by the bridges that connect them.

Verheyen 30 Licks Course

Not just a great chops builder course, but this course has helped me expand some of these licks and use them in my improvising. He gets you to think about soloing in a nonlinear fashion. Great Course. Great Teacher.

Potato Chip Licks

Two licks in and an hour later.... I haven't finished the course but I did get a dozen very cool ideas from just two of Carl's. He is very knowledgeable and very creative. He shows you a lick, explains it and then demos in a song/backing track. This way your new lick becomes useful and practical in a real world sense. I have several of his other courses and always refer back to them for ideas..
