About this course
During the ‘60s, jazz guitarists including Howard Roberts, Grant Green, Kenny Burrell, George Benson, and Wes Montgomery famously played in organ trios, led by organ payer like"Brother" Jack McDuff, Johnny "Hammond" Smith, and Richard "Groove" Holmes. This blues-based style of jazz that incorporated elements of R&B was then, and still is, one of the most popular sub-genres of jazz.
Henry Johnson’s Jazz Inspirations course of study not only pays homage to the guitars masters of this style, but it will also majorly stock your vocabulary with countless moves to complement virtually any contemporary groove-based improvisations.

I even got to tour and work with many of the great organists early in my career including Jimmy Smith and Jack McDuff.
In this Jazz Inspirations course, I’ll solo over 10 organ trio backing tracks in that soul jazz style. After each performance study, I’ll show you a few traditional key approaches to focus on. I’ll also show you some of my own approaches, which I think you’ll enjoy and find very useful in your own playing.”
Henry will solo over each of the 10 backing tracks in a variety of keys and tempos. After each solo, he will break down the solo emphasizing the key concepts and techniques in play.
Henry will explain and demonstrate all of the key concepts and approaches along the way. You’ll get standard notation and tabs for all of the performance studies. Plus, Henry includes all of the rhythm tracks for you to work with on your own. In addition, you’ll be able to loop or slow down any of the videos so that you can work with the lessons at your own pace.

Here, we break down the separate tools like octaves, and double stops that you can study and add to your own playing.
Wendkos Winds
This is a slow funky Bb minor groove, or what we now call a "soul jazz" groove. We're starting on the Bb minor, then we go to Eb7 (which is a bit weird), then back to the Bb minor, then to C7, B7, and back to Bb minor again. At the end, there's an Fsus chord. Let's check it out.

Here's my performance study of "Wendkos Winds". I'll demonstrate how I approach playing over slower funky grooves using rhythms and double stops.

Jazz solos over organ trio backing tracks
Mr Johnson's solos over organ trio backing tracks (standard's chord progressions). He is showing the key approaches to focus on. Then we are being left alone to play along with the backing tracks. Its not a beginner kind of lesson but good opportunity to play over backing tracks with the ideas and approaches given. Everything is tabbed and notated too. Thanks to Mr Johnson for his motivation, really cool.

Henry Johnson Jazz Inspirations
Wow I'm blown away! I'm working on the first piece now. Like a great book, I can't put it down --I will finish this piece tonight. Its not easy but I have a good grasp on Jazz language from other studies. I highly recommend. Way better than a collection of licks. I want to meet this guy and personally thank him-hope to shake his hand. One of my mentors Mark Stefani told me about Henry-I learned lots from Mark too--this seems like the next logical step. I had the other course Jazz Expressions and had not started and I will now after seeing this! Also just purchased the Trading solo edition. Great bargain here. Phenomenal guitarist : )
