About this course

Jazz improvisation is the sound of life and freedom. Players like Kenny Burrell, Wes Montgomery, John Coltrane, and Cannonball Adderley are all masters of improvisation, effortlessly coloring the changes by weaving melodic lines in and out of the underlying harmony. But as guitar players, many of us struggle to break free of the boxes, scales, and chord shapes we all know and love.

Wolf Marshall’s UNCAGED Jazz Improv will open your ears, free your hands, and UNCAGE your improvisation!

Wolf Marshall is internationally acclaimed as an accomplished master guitarist and as one of the most prolific, insightful guitar educators on the planet. He has authored hundreds of articles and columns in virtually ever guitar publication. Wolf has been interviewed by scores of magazines and newspapers, including The Wall Street Journal, as a celebrity educator and music expert. Recommended by the legendary jazz artist Kenny Burrell, he has been on the faculty of the UCLA Jazz Department since 2007.

We’re thrilled to welcome Wolf to the family with his first TrueFire course, UNCAGED Jazz Improv! You will likewise be thrilled as you play your way through what we consider to be one of the most enlightening curricular approaches on the topic of jazz improvisation.

”Freedom of playing outside the confines of boxes is key to a flow of sounds and ideas for guitarists. This course is specially designed to help players achieve the freedom and facility conducive to creativity and the flow of sounds and ideas. UN-CAGING allows these musical events to occur effortlessly on the fingerboard. Along the way, you'll gain the vocabulary, technical skills, and aesthetic insights that are essential to speaking the jazz language on guitar.”

Wolf organized this course into five sections. In the first, he unveils minor-seventh CAGED chord shapes and explores several creative approaches for improvising melodies oriented around those shapes. In the second section, you will learn how to UNCAGE your improvisations by exploring the “transitional” shapes that live between CAGED forms.

The third section expands the UNCAGED system into dominant chord applications for even more flexibility and bluesier lines. You’ll also explore minor-chord conversions and some ii V applications over a funk vamp. In the fourth section, Wolf unlocks two more “exotic colors” by incorporating the sounds of the melodic minor and harmonic minor.

In the last section of the course, Wolf guides you as you put all of these improvisational approaches to work over four jazz tracks in a variety of keys and grooves.

Wolf will explain and demonstrate all of the key concepts and approaches along the way. You’ll get standard notation and tabs for all of the performance studies. Plus, you’ll be able to use TrueFire’s learning tools to sync the tab and notation to the video lesson. You can also loop or slow down the videos so that you can work with the lessons at your own pace. All of the backing tracks are included to work with on your own as well.

Course Prelude: How it Works
From the beginning of the course to the end, everything you'll hear is a language line. These are essential phrases from the language of jazz--not scales, exercises and rudiments. You'll immediately get to the core of what is spoken through sonic immersion while you enjoy the process of mastering the fingerboard. By working with these jazz language melodies it becomes obvious quickly that a lot of music lives in the territory between the standard CAGED shapes. We'll explore and codify transitions. You'll learn the important connecting links that unite the fingerboard and how to navigate through chord changes with confidence. You'll learn how to play and hear beyond the boundaries with expanded colors and different melodic possibilities. Together, we'll move from the basic modal and diatonic sounds to blues, minor, diminished, augmented, altered chord sounds, substitutions and more.
SECTION 1: CAGED Mechanisms
The CAGED system places chords and melodies in a five-position network. The details and particulars are crucial as a starting point to fingerboard mastery and understanding how chord shapes and melodic patterns coexist on the guitar. This section defines and explains the workings of this all-important first step––and why it's important to expand beyond its boundaries.
CAGED Chord Forms Review
Our first step in developing creativity and uncaging begins with minorizing the basic major chords. You'll hear how minor-seventh chords are developed using the CAGED system. You'll learn to create a five-position CAGED network with minor 7 chords that cover the fingerboard and open up the world of position playing. Additional exotic minor chord colors are introduced. You'll learn that harmony informs melody.
Additional Chord Colors Explored
Harmony informing melody is taken deeper in this demonstration. Learn how to approach and target important chord tones with your melody. Additional melodic colors of the jazz language are introduced: the Hexatonic Scale, the Bebop Scale, and chromatic notes as well as minor-ninth and minor-major-seventh tones.
Blues & Pentatonic Colors
Why are blues and jazz so closely related? The answer is given in this demonstration. You'll learn how to add blues and pentatonic colors to the minor-chord network––and what gives the blues its distinct sound. Combining blues and pentatonic colors with other minor sounds adds extra feeling and power to your improvisations.
Linking Chords Across the Fretboard
Learn to how to connect the shapes and sounds in this segment. All the basic colors are combined and linked with chord forms that define their musical place on the fingerboard.

Wolf Marshall - Improv Uncaged

Beyond my skill level, but I like to understand the big picture of a new language (or dialect). I listen & aspire. I like Wolf's explanations & playing style. The notation & tab sync are TF's best to date.

Wolf Marshall is a great guitar player and communicator who, in his own words, offers us the "real 'poop'" in this course. So if you wish you could improvise with more freedom and play lines like Wes Montgomery and Kenny Burrell, application to the material in this course is certainly going to accelerate your journey towards that goal.
