SECTION 1: Essential Concepts
In this section, I'll show some techniques and approaches to play Brazilian jazz guitar. Let's get started.
Bossa Nova Swing & Variations
Let's talk about the bossa nova swing. I'm from Brazil, and I play several kinds of Brazilian rhythms, with the bossa nova being one of our most famous rhythms. We'll start with the basic version of it, and then talk about some variations and different ways to play a bossa nova.
Traditional Brazilian Music Styles
Another traditional Brazilian music style is the samba. The samba is our main music, taken from a mixture of European and African sounds, created in Brazil in the 1900's. Songs like "Aquarela do Brasil" are a great example, or "Tico-Tico no Fubá". Samba is different than bossa nova in that it's a little stronger sounding, with bossa nova being very soft and sophisticated. A variation coming from samba to be aware of is the choro, or chorinho.
Right Hand Fingers & Approach
When playing, I keep my right hand very compact and close together. This allows me to play very soft and fast, but still allowing me to play strongly when needed. We call this the "classical technique", and you can see my nails that I use to play in this style and get the sound I'm looking for. If you don't have long nails, you can use acrylic nails or try with just your fingers.
Right Hand Patterns & Variations
Here we'll look at some right hand rhythm patterns and variations on them. We'll look at bossa nova, bolero, a funky rhythm pattern, flamenco, jazz swing, waltz, and some different things you can do with them.
Right Hand Arpeggio Exercises
Here are some right hand arpeggio exercises to learn in order to improve your right hand picking technique.
